D/FW Metroplex Putting its Worst Foot Forward
Mey Own 'Ead | 02/03/2011 | Cpl Dwayne Hicks

The DFW area had years to plan for this but three days after being hit with a winter storm it still doesn't have important sidewalks cleared. Yes, the roads to and from the Death Star (Cowboys Stadium) have been cleared but the sidewalks in the two downtown areas where the teams, media and out-of-town visitors are staying are still covered with a thick layer of ice.

Enjoy this Super Bowl, DFW. It will be your last. Just ask Detroit and Atlanta.

next year’s SB will be in Giants Stadium.

Wow I didn't know that.

They've been telling us in Indianapolis for the last two years it's going to be here in 2012.

Can you post a link?

Yes. The video board doesn’t block the field of play from any seat. The board is actually cool and a necessity if you’re sitting in the upper level.

Indy next year. New Orleans the next year. I think NY/NY the following year.

SB 48 must be an experiment by the NFL to see how well a Super Bowl will be in a cold weather site with an open air stadium. My guess is that it’ll be a miserable failure. Who in their right minds would sit in a deep freeze for several hours except maybe for Packer fans.

There is no reason for Detroit and Atlanta to not host a future SB. Stadium seating capacity aside, who knows what the NFL looks for in a host city.

What sane person would want to go to places like those even in ideal weather?

So you are suggesting that the media and the out-of-towner football fans are sane? ;-)

Super Bowl 46 will be at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, indiana February 5, 2012.

Super Bowl 47 will be at the Louisiana Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana February 3, 2013.

“Dallas ain’t Minneapolis. They rarely have this kind of weather.”

True, but for every year I’ve lived in the DFW area there’s been snow and ice storms. You’d think by now they’d have the hang of it.

I’m surprised Seattle hasn’t hosted one yet. The NFL has been open about awarding SB’s to cities with new stadiums.

I'm sure they are hoping for a Southern Cal location, maybe waiting to see if a team moves there.

I'm sure they are hoping for a Southern Cal location [for SB 49 or 50], maybe waiting to see if a team moves there.

Two questions emerge from the discussion of a SoCal-hosted Super Bowl.

1). What teams would be most likely to relocate from their current regions? I think that Jacksonville and Buffalo head that list. Both are considered small-market teams. I'd actually put Buffalo at the top of that list since owner Ralph Wilson (who doesn't even live in New York) is 92 and its doubtful that new ownership for the Bills would want to keep the team there.

2). But is Los Angeles really a good location for the NFL?

The region is over 45% Mexican and they have little interest in American sports (preferring soccer). Ethnic minorities (Russian, Iranians, Arabs and Orientals) comprise a sizable percentage of the county's population. Whites are projected to be at only 23% of the regional makeup in just 8 years.

Since the Mexicans (illegal and otherwise) brazenly refuse to assimilate and adopt American culture (including sports), I wouldn't be surprised if Los Angeles, though it may host a Super Bowl, never gets another NFL franchise.

Indy was a prime candidate to head to LA until the Irsays blackmailed the city into building our $700 million dollar palace funded almost entirely by tax dollars AND an agreement that all the revenues from non football events go to the Irsays.

Jerry Jones doesn't want salt tracked into his new play house.

"What sane person would want to go to places like those even in ideal weather? Deep Ellum is filled with menacing ghetto thugs and a several years ago, a Dallas police officer was shot near Commerce Street as the inner city diversity crowd cheered on his murderer with their typical hooting and hollering. The West End is home to roaming "yute" gangs."

Really? I don't go to Deep Ellum all that much, and mostly during the daytime, passing through on my bicycle, I've never had a problem. That place gets weird late at night and you can get jacked up, but "roaming yute gangs" in the West End? I've never seen that, was just there last weekend but again in daylight. I've never heard this. Now, you get away from the lighted areas and wander some of the outer parking lots, you do that at your own risk late at night. It's a scary place away from the inner areas, but I haven't ever seen any roaming gangs down there.

"The nice places in the region are in the Conservative suburban areas such as Highland Park, Southlake Town Square and Legacy Town Center."

Well you sure won't find any gangs there, but what are you going to do besides have a meal? Highland Park? No fun there, nothing happening for the masses, no concerts or open places to walk around. The cops will bust you if you try to get the least bit rowdy. I'm thinking more of Lower Greenville, which has gone way downhill in the past decade or so, but still a fairly safe area IMHO.

I love downtown Dallas, but only during the day. At night there is no telling what you might run into, it is a rough place to be and no telling what you might see or what might happen to you.

I am merely asking for opinions and not trying to engage anyone in an argument or attempting to start a flame war.

Why is Jerry Jones so reviled, even here on FR by Conservatives?

I'll admit that, like most, I was angry by the manner in which he assumed control back in 1989. His handling of Tom Landry was disrespectful. I had usher duties at church the following Sunday and I recall that some harsh words were spoken about Jones. Forgiveness only began after the initial 1-15 season gave way to the string of Super Bowl wins.

From what I can gather, Jerry Jones and the Cowboys organization contribute to primarily Republican causes. Unlike Dan Rooney of the Steelers, he's never given a "thank you" to Obama after a victory. His past business experience is in oil and I've never heard him mouthing the environwhacko party line. Plus he opposes the disgusting "Rooney Rule". That one thing alone accrues to his credit.

On those rare occasions that I drop by to see what's going on with the Kos Kommie Kiddies, Jerry Jones is absolutely hated over there (almost as much as they hold Texas and the South in contempt).

While I'm not sure that Jerry Jones is just a few steps away from being a FReeper, he does seem to have some Conservative credentials. So what are the reasons that he's so disliked?

It might be possible that our divergent views could be generational. I'm old enough to remember Harry Truman in office so that gives you an idea of my age. I'm also old enough to remember when downtown areas were the place to be, with movie theaters, department stores and nice family restaurants.

Then came the 60's and the 'RATS ruined all that with their various entitlement programs and so-called social justice policies.

What you might find acceptable, I perceive as threatening. I don't care much for weird, panhandlers, loud music, raucous behavior, people babbling away in foreign languages or ghetto garb (hats worn sideways, baggy pants and body piercing). In short Ozzie Nelson is more my speed as opposed to Ozzy Osbourne. It likely just boils down to my personal preferences which are different from your.

By the way, I think there may be hope if Conservatives such as yourself are able to reclaim downtown Dallas. If enough such folks can displace the riffraff (and the illegals), maybe it can become a nice place again.

Come on you guys, give us a break. Boss Hawg is running the show, he won’t tolerate any f-ups.

The rest of us are dealing with rolling blackouts. OK, Oncor/TXU calls them “controlled outages.” What a weasel word. They forgot and cut power to three of the big critical care hospitals downtown. OOOOPSY, sorry so sorry.

We get a little wintry mix most years but we don’t get snow that much. We get sleet that freezes and this year was bad. It turned so cold so fast there was nothing to do about it but deal. I was amazed by how bad it got and still is. I give not a crap about the Boss Hawg Bowl, Jerry will get what he wants. But yeah, it is hurting the folks who spent the bux to come down here and the local bidnezz folks who hoped to make some income from all the visitors.

I still have a big sheet of ice on the street in front of my house, even the emergency vehicles are having to crawl when they go by. It was bad and now they say it will snow again tonight. What if the Big Game had been in NY/NJ a month or so ago when AGW dumped a couple of feet of snow on them? Hell, it was warmer in NYC than Dallas the last few days.

That just ain’t right, but it is what it is. Jerry’s big show will go off, it is supposed to be 50-60F on Sunday and we all hope that will melt all this ice. F the game, we only care about getting around town like normal folks. I don’t see Jones out there shoveling my sidewalk or driving a sand truck on the bridges, so F him too. Dang Arkie.

I respect your reply. From a Conservative standpoint, Dallas IS run by ‘Rats, no doubt. I just don’t feel all that threatened going downtown, West End or Deep Ellum.

During daylight ;) At night, all bets are off. It can be dangerous, people have been jacked and worse, you pays your money and you takes your chances. I still have fun every time I go down there, but I understand that A Man’s Gotta Know His Limitations, to quote Dirty Harry.
