A couple of weeks ago we reported that the Italian inventor Andrea Rossi has announced that he has a commercial ready cold fusion reactor that is safe and reliable, capable of producing 10 kW of heat; and is in process of going into production, with a 1 MW plant being built ganging 125 of these units together.
Rossi has allowed outside scientists to perform tests on the module and report on their findings. Papers on these tests have begun to emerge.
In a paper that came out Monday morning (Italy time), Prof. Giuseppe Levi of the University of Bologna describes two experiments. One was performed in December of 2010 and the other on January 14 of 2011, during the public demonstration and press conference. In both experiments Andrea Rossi's cold fusion reactor is tested to determine if more energy is output than input. The results are clear that in both tests much more energy was produced than was put into the system.
In the first test, Levi reported that Rossi's device actually self-sustained for approximately 15 minutes after all power was cut, until they had to stop the reactor by applying additional cooling water. When reading the document one may realize that the output energy for the second test is missing. However, this information has already been posted and was over 10KW.
In the second paper (ref, pp. 7-12) Dr. David Bianchini, also of the University of Bologna, describes his tests to determine if radioactivity is escaping the system for safety purposes, during the January 14 demonstration. He detects no radiation escaping the shielding of the system.
Another paper describing a test to determine what radiation is produced inside of the cell is posted here.
Then, in a paper that came out on January 26, Mauro Villa, also with Bologna University, describes his tests to determine if any gamma radiation is being produced inside of the reactor. Two holes were placed in the shielding to allow radiation to be measured. No gamma radiation significantly above background was detected. However, he does not discount the possibility of lower energy gamma rays being produced.
Classical physics predicts that some type of radiation must be produced by the system to heat the components of the reactor to heat the water. Villa had predicted that gamma radiation is the most likely culprit, but his measurements did not verify that premise. So either this is not a fusion reaction according to classical physics, or there is some kind of new physics taking place that is yet to be understood and characterized.
Some speculate that perhaps X-Rays are being emitted. The lead shielding in the apparatus is consistent with this presumption. This would be similar to the X-Rays produced by Black Light Power's system involving Hydrinos a smaller, more energetic variation of the hydrogen atom. (Ref.)
Rossi claims that outside scientists have tested his system to determine if X Rays are produced, but has not yet received the results.
Since these new papers have been posted many new messages have been posted in the comment section of the Journal of Nuclear Physics blog run by Rossi. Some of his answers confirm what he has already said, and others give new information. For example, He is starting a 1 year research program with the University of Bologna to investigate the reactions inside of the reactor. Work on the 1MW plant is nearing completion and will open in a "matter of months." The wait is mostly due to "authorization" issues. The volume of the reactor is 1 liter. They expect their patent that covers their catalysts and special processes done to the nickel to be granted by the time the 1MW plant opens. When the patent is granted they will release full details on the catalysts, special processes done to the nickel, construction of the device, etc. They have ran their device in self-sustain mode for several hours at a time.
So where are we at this point?
It seems more people think this technology is legitimate. Of course the final proof of this will be when the 1MW plant opens.
Also, the news about his technology is spreading. Articles have appeared in EE Times, Zero Hedge, Popular Science, Discovery, TechEye, Fox News, Gizmodo, Motherboard, Mother Nature Network, and elsewhere. Most of these are highly skeptical and cite PhysOrg as their primary source, which cited our January 17 PESN coverage as its primary source.
We continue to chronicle the main developments at PESWiki.com.
Lawrence Rayburn has posted some comments in a forum, which we've compiled, in which he seems to think it wouldn't be hard to build one of these cold fusion reactors. He claims to have built a working Tesla Radiant Energy Collector some years ago, but he thinks this cold fusion reactor is much more simple and plausible for widespread implementation.
I bet the only thing you can actually *buy* at this point is shares in some enterprise the inventor is associated with. What do you want to bet?
Unfortunately, and wrongly, unlikely.
It is throttled in the US Patent Office,
and by key powerful ancient physicists clinging to their
last century physics. Similar to fossilized Lord Kelvin
giving his talk at Kodak, there claiming that atoms
don’t exist.
That’s the coolest “tin foil hat” I’ve ever seen!~
A Mr. “Ponzi” was a notable Italian inventor, too.
The greenies will not like a cheap source of energy if this is proven verifiable...
I would say a true test would be for this thing to pump it’s own water and split it for fuel... Plus producing excess energy to be fed into the grid...
Are we sure those scientist weren’t from Baloney University?
The government and oil companies are gonna have to call out of retirement those folks that destroyed the 100MPG carburetor back in the 60’s.
Seriously, if everything in this article is true, it would completely destroy the status-quo, sending the worlds economy/cultures into absolute chaos. I think most world leaders prefer incremental change/improvement to the point that they will do anything necessary to keep this sort of thing from becoming a reality, no matter how real it may be.
Don't look at me, man. I'm so skeptical of everything that I don't even believe in stuff that's already happened to me personally.
Are we sure those scientist weren’t from Baloney University?
The problem is energy companies and rich people make these things or people disappear.
Univ of Bologna was founded 923 years ago and may be the oldest university in the world. One of there retired esteemed professors who wrote over 800 papers was one of the first to say GW was total BS. Fermi was there, Copernicus, Dante, Thomas Aquinas. They have had a medical school for 841 years.
The point is I doubt these guys would risk their and the U of Bologna reputation on BS.
Compare that to Penn State, Univ of Virginia and other who perpetrated the GW fraud. Bologna has a lot better reputation then most Ivy League schools who train our elite gangsters and banksters.
>> I don’t even believe in stuff that’s already happened to me personally.
heh... and I thought *I* was a skeptic!
Well, since it isn't going to produce any CO2, they'll have to declare that it's creating "heat pollution" that's contributing to globull warming....
It’s starting to look like God threw up his hands and said, “Well, let’s change the direction of things.”
Well Univ of Bologna’s senior professor was one of the first to debunk global warming. American universities STILL promote it along with NASA. The Italian university has been around for almost a thousand years.
They do not engage in AA like the Ivy League where supposedly hussein and moochelle “graduated.” Her thesis was hidden not because it was a racist rant but because it was so poorly written.
I also think Univ of Bologna is more concerned with acedemics versus if they ahve quarterback who can run the option.
The best medical doctor I ever met was a graduate of Univ of Bologna. They have only been teaching medicine for over 800 years.
I know Harvard grads who said their medical school was destroyed by AA.
Can I trade him my Al Gore stock? LOL
Zing!
Hold on. The claim is that they have “fused” hydrogen and nickel to form copper. Nickel (58) is the most stable isotope. Adding a proton would give you Copper (59), which is unstable and decomposes by a series of beta decays (emission of a neutron).
If no neutron emission is detected, then only stable isotopes of copper would have been produced. This means that the only nickel isotopes involved in the “fusion” would be 62 and 64, giving copper 63 and 65.
Unfortunately, these nickel isotopes have nuclear spin 0, hydrogen has nuclear spin 1/2 and copper 63 and copper 65 have nuclear spin 3/2. For this reaction to be occurring, a lot would have to be happening to two nickel isotopes with a total mole fraction of about .03.
Unlikely.

Some other technical attributes of the process include:
Regular Ni is used even though other isotopes may provide better efficiency. They think all the isotopes work to produce the effect.
For some unknown reason, not all of the Ni in the cell reacts with the hydrogen to produce energy. The percentage of the Ni that reacts is very low.
Even though the percentage of the Ni that reacts with hydrogen is very low one kilogram of nickel powder should deliver 10 kW of energy for 10,000 hours. The consumption rate of hydrogen and nickel are 0.1 g of Ni and 0.01 g of H to produce 10 kWh/h. Note that for every picogram of nickel that is actually fused or reacts to the hydrogen, much more must be added. Not all the nickel added will react. So if you add 0.1g of Ni to produce 10kWh/h only a small fraction of that Ni will actually be utilized. When the device shuts off due to running out of fuel most of the .1g could be remaining.
Tungsten is in no way used. However, “other elements” are used.
Radiation is produced. However in the device demonstrated which is made for commercial use no radiation escapes due to lead shielding. The fact that radiation is produced is proof of a nuclear reaction.
In the demonstration device for every unit of input there was approximately 37 units of output.
A small percentage of the nickel is transmuted into copper. The amount of copper found in the cell is far greater than the impurities in the nickel powder. None of this copper is “unstable.”
There is no radioactivity in the cell after it is turned off. No nuclear “waste.”
All of the information needed to successfully replicate a self sustaining system is in the patent application (which is being held proprietary presently).
The power density for thermal energy only is 5 liters per kilowatt.
The hydrogen has to be all hydrogen with no deuterium or heavy hydrogen. Apparently, any heavy hydrogen stops the reaction.
This current system never goes below 6 times more energy out than in. During the test it produced 20 times more energy out than in. In the lab they have done similar tests and obtained 400 times more out than in, but it produced explosions.
(speculation, pending clarification) The fuelling of the system could probably be done via a relatively inexpensive fuel rod that would need to be replaced every few months.
