Renewed Push to Give Obama an Internet "Kill Switch"

Renewed Push to Give Obama an Internet "Kill Switch"

A controversial bill handing President Obama power over privately owned computer systems during a "national cyberemergency," and prohibiting any review by the court system, will return this year.

Internet companies should not be alarmed by the legislation, first introduced last summer by Sens. Joseph Lieberman (I-Conn.) and Susan Collins (R-Maine), a Senate aide said last week. Lieberman, an independent who caucuses with Democrats, is chairman of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee.

"We're not trying to mandate any requirements for the entire Internet, the entire Internet backbone," said Brandon Milhorn, Republican staff director and counsel for the committee.

Instead, Milhorn said at a conference in Washington, D.C., the point of the proposal is to assert governmental control only over those "crucial components that form our nation's critical infrastructure."

Portions of the Lieberman-Collins bill, which was not uniformly well-received when it became public in June 2010, became even more restrictive when a Senate committee approved a modified version on December 15. The full Senate did not act on the measure.

“prohibiting any review by the court system”

man that whole due process thing is so outdated.

We understand your frustration, but using the name of God in that context is inappropriate, to say the least. Repent, believe the Gospel, and understand what Jesus did for you. Please have respect for the Most High.

The reason this country’s in the shape that it’s in is because we, as a nation, have turned our backs on God. No reverence at all.

This is a spiritual battle, after all.

I hear ya. Didn’t mean to offend. Seriously. But we are DONE, baby boy, as a country.

Lieberman-Collins
Lieberman will not seek reelection and Collins should persuaded as well. Together, these two can't muster one half a brain cell. If they can't realize by now what a vicious, cut throat, deceptive administration this is they deserve to be in a home for dementia patients.

Just wondering if they considered what kind of reaction from the American people when an internet “kill” command was executed? It would only escalate an already desperate situation.

Only irresponsible lawmakers would ever consider giving an Internet “Kill Switch” to government.

I’ve read the whole bill. I still haven’t found the “kill switch” part of it. I could be wrong, so please post the relevant sections of the bill if I am.

How far is it from “prohibiting any review by the court system” to “President for life”? Ask Idi Amin Dada, he would tell you “not very far”.

I’d prefer a volume knob that goes to 11.

How similar is this to the executive branch grounding all planes on 9/11? They didn't stop all transportation, just air transport. I don't like the idea of Obama having a "switch" for anything, but let's face it: as long as he is POTUS, he's got a lot of "switches" in his pocket already.

So, for those techies better informed than I: is such a "kill switch" remotely possible without shutting down the power grid altogether? I seem to think not. However, I could imagine an order to private entities to halt certain transactions if a specific threat had been identified; that's just common sense, is it not?

Why does the internet need a kill switch? And why give that authority to the president?

Ah, I can relax easy now. For a minute there I thought they were going after our freedoms. /sarcasm
