Well, I would not condemn him as a commie. Economic conditions were so dreadful back then, there were so many people suffering and actually starving to death in Scotland and the abuses of the aristocracy so cruel and prevalent, that a compassionate soul who could not predict the future might well support some ideas to equalize matters a bit.
But he was pretty hard on the womenfolk, for sure! Poor Jean bore him nine children, and it seems he could hardly look at a woman without starting a child. A naughty lad.

Burns was trying to tear down the influence of the church, thus aiding socialistic ideas.
His "free-love" practices are a dead giveaway. He would have been fully content belonging to the SDS in the 60's.

There was no separation of chuch & state in Scotland then, he would have fit in nicely during the American Revolution - and clearly sided with the people in the French Revolution - to be fair the commies didn’t come around till well after his death.
Interesting points though.
Burns’ bohemian lifestyle wouldn’t have put him in good stead with the Founding Fathers. His strident anti-churchism would also have made him unpopular. The French Revolution was more his style. Even Thomas Jefferson came to renounce the French Revolution for its over-the-top mob rule.
The seeds of communism were born in the French revolution.

At the end of his visit, he is shown into a ward with a number of patients who show no obvious signs of injury. He goes to examine the first man he sees, and the man proclaims:
