THRIFT SHOP PHOTOGRAPHY
SELF | Jan 24, 2011 | swampsniper

I've bought 2 new cameras in the past 10 years, both died just after the warranty expired. I've done a lot better on Ebay, Craigslist and the local thrift shots.

I bought a thrift shop lens last week, an old Minolta autofocus 50mm f1.4, for 5 bucks. Didn't look at it good until I got home, it cleaned up like new and it turns out it's worth berween $200.00 and $300.00.

It's better than the lottery, LOL!

I caught Grandson Gerry with it today, about 3 more weeks and he will head out for basic training.<>P GRANDSON GERRY

I tried to make him better off than I am, so far it’s working. My daddy was a great provider but never spent much time with me. I missed that, figured I wouldn’t be that way with my daughter and then my grandson.

I have that exact same camera tho not the f1.4 lens.

I thought I got a good buy at the local Wal-Mart. They had it on clearance for $299 and that included the 18-70mm kit lens.

A week or two later I happened to be in the same store and looked in the camera case. All the Sonys were gone but I noticed someone had got a great deal. The last price was still there. $179.

It is not rated as one of the best DSLRs but you could not prove it by me. The shots will enlarge to 8x10 without even the slightest sign of needing more resolution.

It is highly rated in one area. The AF is extremely fast. It is clearly faster than my old Nikon N90s which impressed me as being about as fast as one could want.

My son the Sony SLR fan, keeps wondering how you manage to find all these Minolta lenses. Maybe there are just more of them down south. He lives in ID, where potatoes are worth more than cameras and lenses.

I have a couple of good cameras gathering dust because of the digital revolution. The Hasselblad C503 is the one that hurts my heart.

They will go a lot bigger than 8X10. The A-200 is a capable camera.

Watch Craigslist, Ebay and KEH, and the flea markets and thrift shops. The lenses KEH rates as bgn grade are a fantastic deal, their grading is very conservative.

It looks like my parents old house and land will sell at the end of this month. If the sale goes through, I will be able to purchase a lot of things I have wanted for a long time.

One will be a Sony A850 or A900. Both have 24.6MP sensors, the highest of any current DSLR.

Actually 6MP is enough for just about anything. My old cheap Pentax 110D has that sensor and will produce great images. I already have a large number of Maxxum (Sony)mount lenses tho will add a couple of high end ones.

My favorite camera is the Minolta X370, with 28-70mm and 70-210mm lenses. I bought mine in 1985, and I still have it. I've worn out a ton of lenses, but the camera is still operational. It sits on a shelf with other "antiques" now.

For the last 6 years, I've been using a Sony F717. As far as digital camera's go, it's old school, but it still takes good photo's.

All the Maxxum lenses are great on full frame sensors. My concern is that everyone will go SSM and stop making bodies with a focus motor. Then we’ll be stuck with the same short life span for lenses already a problem with digital bodies. When Sony kept using the Minolta A mount they probably didn’t predict the competition they’d get from the old Maxxum lenses.

I bought a Nikon F2A back in the ‘70s, and I've stuck with Nikon ever since. It's also my good fortune that all the Nikon lenses I've bought over the years still work on my latest Nikon, a D3x, thirty-five years later. Some of those lenses produce better results in some situations than their modern versions, the 55mm f3.5 Micro-Nikkor, for example. Nikon SLR lenses will always work on Nikon cameras which makes them truly a lifetime investment, I expect to pass them on to my daughter when my time comes.

That is why I am going to get a Nikon D90 tho I might wait until it is discontinued and prices come down. Actually it is pretty well priced right now but is getting old.

It is one of the few Nikons which will work with the old lenses which don’t have a motor in them.

I also have a lot of old AF Nikkors
