The recent Arizona tragedy has, of course, brought the entire issue of firearms control to the front of our national consciousness, along with the usual assortment of bloviators, pundits and podium thumpers. At the risk of being considered one of them, I would like to offer several alternatives to address the problem.
n Repeal the Second Amendment. At the time of its writing and through the early 1900s, The United States was a nation of largely isolated communities that depended on their own initiative for mutual security.
That time is clearly passed...

I would echo the thoughts of one of the commenters posting on the newspaper website. Sir, I appreciate your service to our country. Now, please live out the remainder of your life in quiet obscurity. I'll keep my right to self-defense, but you go right ahead and give up yours. May God be with you, cause Samuel Colt obviously isn't.
I agree with you!!! The 2nd Admendment is OURS not the Government’s.
Bring it...and good luck getting a repeal of the 2nd Amendment!!
People always want to change the laws rather than those who BREAK the law. Guns still don’t kill people, People kill people when they break the law. We are still trying to blame something other than the guy who was guilty of pulling the trigger - it was premeditated murder! Now, he needs to be tried, convicted, and sentenced. Some might say he was insane, but I don’t believe that excuses his actions. He knew what he was doing. Changing the 2nd amendment won’t stop people like him - but it will stop US from protecting ourselves FROM people like him.
What citizens....
cowardly little wussies who think the cops will protect them??
what a bunch of losers
What country is this guy living in? We have lived in communities most of our lives that only had county sheriffs for protection. By the time he would reach you, he would only have to file a report on the crime scene.
Your personal protection is up to you in most of the cities in this nation as well, and according to a SCOTUS ruling, police are not there to protect you and can’t be sued when they don’t.
This man is living in a fool’s paradise.
I agree. This idiot probably wears a lot of Tennessee orange as well.
When seconds count, Police are only minutes away.
Only one twit agreed with him. All the rest are smacking him down.
Isolated communities. Until recently I lived on a farm where you couldn’t see your neighbor and you only saw a sheriff’s car once or twice a year. (Often the only traffic on the road was the mailman once a day.)
I miss that. But to people who live outside the hive, what are they suppossed to do when waiting 30-40 minutes for the police to arrive? Serve the murdering criminals tea?
Now your Knoxville lamestream rag is calling for a repeal of the 2nd Amendment!! Hello, is there anyone over there...sane!?!!
Hell, I didn't even mention your former Senator Frist (and once Senate Majority Leader) speaking out against repealing ØBozoCare.
Geeez...is it something in your water?
If the AF is reduced to promoting someone with this pathetic a grasp of what the Constitution is he shouldn't have been in charge of a five dollar bill let alone men and machines.
L
Tucson should tell you that time has not passed
I have a liberal friend, and our biggest disagreement is "guns". I always ask him "if the 2nd amendment is up for grabs why can't the 1st amendment" be up for grabs
He has never given me an answer
Crazies are coming out of the woodwork
To all;
I hereby apoligize for the obviously skewed and liberalized rational displayed by the good Colonel. No doubt he is well meaning and entitled to his view of the condition of the “certain inalienable rights endowed on men by their Creator”. However, I wish to assure you that few military men (and women) are so out of touch with the facts. Yes, we all wish our swords could be beaten into plowshares, however, the reality of the world, domestic and foreign, is such that doing so insures that those who in fact do transform their weapons into tools will be ruled those that do not. History proves that the outcome of such equation is always less than compassionate on the former.
I will not be ruled except by elected represenation, and even with that context, certain privledges and immunities do not lie within the bounds of any human governmental interference; as they (these several endowed rights) do not emanate from man or his governemnt, but directly from our Creator.
Freedom of conscience, voice and life are the three keys in my expereince.
No legislator can morally dictate elimination or even constraint on any of those, except by criminal behavior on one subject to the common law of this nation.
This man, who no doubt served honorably, must defer to the natural laws of man, namely the right to protect oneself from illegal or immoral attack. Never give up your means to resist evil, otherwise it will overcome the light.
It IS about the temporal conflict of good versus evil.

God Bless America
Well said! And your country thanks you for your service.
Good luck with that.
