Tuesday Morning Quaterback: Football gods punish Patriots again
ESPN ^ | 1/18/2011 | Greg Easterbrook

Since taking the field with a 18-0 record in Super Bowl XLII, just 60 minutes from perfection, the New England Patriots have not won a playoff game. In their latest postseason collapse, versus the new York Jets, New England's offense, averaging a league-best 32 points, was held to 14 points at home until a garbage-time touchdown with seconds remaining.

There are many reasons for New England's postseason woes: some specific to the Patriots, others generic to all football, one particular to a great performance by the Jets' defense. But Tuesday Morning Quarterback thinks this is the core reason: The football gods are not yet finished punishing Bill Belichick for Spygate.

“The football gods are not yet finished punishing Bill Belichick for Spygate.”

Maybe he just can’t win without spying.

18-1 the year he got caught, 14-3 this year, pretty clear he can win without spying. Just can’t seem to win the last game of the year.

The odd thing is that even though the Patriots are out of the play offs, the entire state of Massachusetts will shut down for one day to celebrate the team...Patriots Day.

The football gods are still punishing the Pats for the ‘tuck rule’.

I’m elated just to not be hearing any more noise about Brady and Belachik... I’m growing very weary learning about what a genius he is.

Brady is suffering from the Samson-in-reverse syndrome. He needs to cut his hair and quit looking like some neo-hippie.

This writes is an asshat. The Jets have a veryyyyyy good defense. They have the best CB in the game and Cromartie is damned good. They have talent all around and were ranked as one of the best units of the league. They shut down Manning in Indy last week where many calls tend to go the Colts’ way. As much as I hate on the JETS they are a damned good football team.

The Pats have a lot of young players and it showed with the fake punt decision and breakdowns. Oh yeah, their coaching staff is rather thin as evidenced by the failure to adjust. Lastly, their O-Line once again got exposed for being weak. However, they get two very good players back from injury next year along with maturing young players and with 6 of the top 90 players to be selected in the April draft they are actually going to be better. 14-2 in a rebuilding year?????

Jets beat them earlier this year and they have shown that they can get to the passer while covering WRs.

I used to give the natives a lot of flak about this holiday since they are so controlled by the state.....and that the Patriots didn't make it to the Super Bowl http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patriots'_Day

Thanks for this post. I hadn’t realized that stat. Being a mostly ‘college ball’ guy, I hadn’t noticed that.

It is a very interesting stat. Next year will be interesting to see.

I wouldn’t read too much into it. In the NFL streaks are part of the game. Momentum swings. Strengths and weaknesses ebb and flow.

My favorite NFL quote, still to this day, is from former NBA coach Frank Layden who once said:

“Funny how Don Shula, Tom Landry, and Chuck Knoll all got stupid over the same summer.”

Yeah sure, just like we lost Sunday.

These are the best type of loses ever! The only type of loses that make you keep going to the next round!

The Pittsburgh Steelers have played in 15 of the 45 AFC Championship games since the beginning of the Super Bowl era. That is an extraordinary accomplishment. And only in about HALF of those seasons did the Steelers have a real quarterback...those featuring Bradshaw and Big Ben. Pittsburgh has without question been the most successful team in the NFL over the last 45 years. WHY?? Because the first principle has never changed—HIT THE OTHER GUY IN THE MOUTH!!!

This is exactly what I told a Pats die-hard when he bemoaned how badly the Patriots played. I told him he was not giving the Jets D credit where it is due. They played the game they needed to play and obviously learned some lessons from that MNF A-whoppin’ they got.

I think Belichek is getting too full of himself. The genius moves of running the ball down 2 touchdowns, and mostly the idiotic fake punt.
