Phone carriers are basically selling air. The more people they get to buy it, the better. Theoretical profit is unlimited, so they can afford incentives.

My Droid on Verizon 3g was great until December
when LTE was activated. Now my 3g service drops
to 1x frequently. Streaming audio stutters on 1x.
The new iPhone 4 is a 3g device. It will be subject
to the same impaired 3g service as my Droid. I’m
waiting for an LTE device before upgrading.

Let me see if I understand this correctly - After paying (and signing contract) for another smartphone, if you want the iphone 4, you can bring back the other phone and give it back, and they'll give you a $200 visa card when you purchase the iphone4 at retail price?

Verizon iPhone FAQ - $199.99 for the 16GB model, and $299.99 for the 32GB model, with a new 2 year agreement. iPhone 4 will also be available for purchase at full retail price - $649.99 for the 16GB model, and $749.99 for the 32GB model.

Wow, way to stick it to your customers. If they decide to trade in their very recently purchased phone, they get nothing back for that but a $200 visa card, IF they spend $649.99 for the iPhone?

Someone at Verizon better start rethinking this policy before their customers start thinking that paying a $250 termination fee ain't that bad...
