Why I love my strict Chinese mom
NY Post ^ | January 17, 2011 | SOPHIA CHUA-RUBENFELD

Writer Amy Chua shocked the world with her provocative essay, “Why Chinese Mothers are Superior,” when it appeared in the Wall Street Journal earlier this month.

The article, excerpted from her new book, “Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother,” described “how Chinese parents raise such stereotypically successful kids.” It led with a manifesto: “Here are some things my daughters, Sophia and Louisa, were never allowed to do: attend a sleepover; have a playdate; be in a school play; complain about not being in a school play; watch TV or play computer games; choose their own extracurricular activities; get any grade less than an A; not be the No. 1 student in every subject except gym and drama; play any instrument other than the piano or violin; not play the piano or violin.”

While Chua says she has received death threats for her comments (one critic called her the “worst mother ever”), the question remains: What do her own children think? Now Chua’s eldest daughter, Sophia Chua-Rubenfeld, 18, tells her side of the story exclusively to The Post . . .

Dear Tiger Mom,

Wait a second...

this is implies that if you have high expectations, your kids might turn out better??

Oooohhhh.... that is, like, so radical....

“Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother,”

"BATTLE?" Don't they know that's hate speech??

Kids need to develop social skills or they will never figure out how to integrate into the world. They also need to enjoy being a kid so when they grow up they are ready to be adults and not overgrown tweeners/adolescents.

But, this BFF parenting over the past 20 years is garbage. Nothing wrong with telling your kid that to be successful they have to work hard. Instead of creating a reward system that honors putting in the effort too many parents want to blow smoke up their kids’ asses.

There is a difference between high expectations and stealing a persons childhood. This is nothing more than using your child to live out your expectations. Besides, understanding that many Chinese daughters are killed ih the womb, I dont think Tiger mothers are anything to admire.

If you think American Mothers of Chinese decent are strict, try the fathers. My old man made my brothers and I tow the line and made sure he knew what the hell we were up to all through High School.

Although I was pretty wild in High School, he did a excellent job of maintaining control when and where he could, and instilled in me the importance of a good education.

When I wanted to join the military, he took lunch off and went down and signed me up after getting assurances from the recruiter that I had to complete high School.

He knew what he was doing, and figured at least one son was better in the military than roaming the city streets at night.

Got out of the military and went to College for a BS and a Master’s.

setting high standards is one thing-raising your children in an abusive environment , not providing them with social stimulus and name-calling your kids is ABUSE. Those kids of hers might as well be in jail.

It’s been done in North Korea, too, check this out-brainwashing and starvation will make you do anything

Death threats?!? What is wrong with people? Can't we all just get along?

I'll bet it's feminoid Leftists who are doing the threatening.

Why? Because 60s-style feminsts want to pretend that nothing bad will happen if women essentially abandon and neglect their own children, while they (the mothers) try to find "fulfillment" in their careers.

The intensive one-on-one mothering style Chua describes might be over the top, but correct at its core. To grow up without serious emotional deficits, children need an enormous amount of time and attention from someone who is truly devoted to them. I.e., mom. Not some transitory day care worker or nanny.

I'll bet Jared Loughner spent a lot of time in day care. Dylan Kleebold did.

Quite a bit of what I’m seeing in response is really not applicable to how these “specific” kids were really raised. My son has an American Mother of Chinese extraction (note - no hyphenated Americans in our family..) His father (me) is of anglo-saxon/German extraction,i.e. northern European Mutt.

We AGREE on about 95% of how we thought our child should be raised. He was given strict rules of behaviour. We kept him on a short-leash when it comes to things that are really just time wasting like video games. We got him learn the Piano to the point where it wasn’t fun any more ( I studied trumpet for 9 years and WISHED I knew how to play a keyboard instrument...thus Piano.) He brings home a couple of B’s every quarter.. if he has applied himself, then that’s okay. He is a Boy Scout (and hopefully will finish his Eagle project in a couple weeks...) He has chores he has to perform around the house.. and they have to be performed EVERY day.

What did we get out of this? Well- he’s likely to qualify as a National Merit Scholar (we have about a month to wait before that is confirmed. ) He’s chosen a profession to study - and has applied to a University that we can afford if he gets the National Merit Scholar status.(If not - JC for him..and a Cal State..) Hopefully he is set up to have a enjoyable career and graduate without owing any money!

The point is that I’m NOT Chinese, and my son was raised in a manner fairly close to that described in the article. I’m PROUD of my son!

While I think the ladies assumption that ALL Chinese moms are superior is nonsense. It think they are generally doing something right most of the time!

Your father must be very ashamed that you turned out to be a slacker who did not get a Ph.D. ;-)

I don't know much about this mother's methods - I'll have to read more...I do know that the creampuffery masquerading as parenting in this country has been/will be our undoing.

At the shopping mall last weekend I had my 2-yr-old son's chin in my hand and was in his face, firmly but quietly explaining that if he continued disobeying me there would be repercussions. I then noticed a 50-sonmething guy walking by, glaring at me with a nasty expression, obviously displeased with my parenting technique. I glared back and prayed the idiot would say something. The staring match lasted a few seconds before he looked away and kept walking.

Our modern society is hell for kids. Us parents need to take a stand and make our kids toe the line as much as we can. I’ve told people several times that I don’t care if the kids get mad at me and all that stuff. I’m the parent and I know what is best for them. Period.

I didn’t get the Ph.D, but six patents were acceptable to him.

Where did he make you tow the line to, and what did you use? Does that mean you joined the Navy, and he made you practice beforehand?

j/k

Thanks for your service. I hope my kiddo that’s enlisting follows a similar route.
