Ricky Gervais is unlikely to be invited back as Golden Globes host after he mocked the organisers and insulted Hollywood celebrities.
The British comedian's jokes were so near-the-knuckle that when he mysteriously disappeared from the ceremony for an hour, the internet was abuzz with speculation that he had been sacked midway through the broadcast.
He eventually returned, but in subdued form.
His critics included Robert Downey Jr, who told the audience: "Aside from the fact that it's been hugely mean-spirited with mildly sinister undertones, I'd say the show's going pretty good so far, wouldn't you?"
The most controversial gag of the night was about the Church of Scientology. Referring to the film I Love You Phillip Morris, Gervais said it was about "two heterosexual actors pretending to be gay - so the complete opposite of some famous Scientologists, then."
"My lawyers helped me with the wording of that joke," he added as the audience gasped.
He also poked fun at The Tourist, the flop film starring Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp - both of whom were in the audience and smiled gamely. Explaining that it had been a big year for 3D movies, Gervais quipped: "It seems like everything this year was three-dimensional... except the characters in The Tourist."
There were jokes about Charlie Sheen ("It's gonna be a night of partying and heavy drinking. Or as Charlie calls it: breakfast") and Hugh Hefner's sex life. He introduced Bruce Willis as "Ashton Kutcher's dad".
But Gervais perhaps took a risk too far when he mocked the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, the 90-strong group of international film critics who choose the Golden Globe winners.

I find it funny because the more vocal atheists have more belief in God than non-atheists. Most of them actually hate God and you can’t hate an imaginary person. They extend their hatred to the point where they are willing to suffer eternal damnation (just in case He is real—even atheists buy insurance, right?) just to demonstrate their hate and the conflict in their soul (that they say doesn’t exist either) adds to their hate.
If they truly didn’t believe, they’d just smirk and play along with us “superstitious fools”.

Probably his way of saying "sike" for all the previous jokes. The funny thing is, I would dare to say that most people in the USA had no idea that this show was even on, nor did most people care. The organizers of these events have to get the most caustic types of presenters that they can find just to get people to talk about these events now.
Hollywood libs don’t have a problem being mean spirited when it comes to commenting on conservatives. I was glad to see them taken down a few notches.
It’s a trade show. Nothing more.

Gervais sounds like the 21st century version of the other great purveyor of the insult joke — DON RICKLES.
I thought the same thing. It is not "mean spirited" when they are making fun of Bush, Cheney, or Palin. Looks like they can dish it out but can't take it.
I thought it a bad statement, he is going to lose half of his fan base by saying that kind of krappole.

I didn’t even know who this Gervais was but now I think he’s funny.
Gervais is the co-director and co-writer of the hit television series — The Office and the subsequent series Extras,
He has won a multitude of awards and honours, including seven BAFTA Awards, two British Comedy Awards, two Emmy Awards, one Golden Globe Award and the 2006 Rose d’Or, as well as a Screen Actors Guild Award nomination.
In 2007 he was voted the 11th greatest stand-up comic on Channel 4’s 100 Greatest Stand-Ups and again in the updated 2010 list as the 3rd greatest stand-up comic. In 2010, he was named on the Time 100 list of the world’s most influential people.
Never heard of him, but I think I like him now.
We don’t have TV, and wouldn’t watch an award show if we did.
It does sound like this guy walked in and took no prisoners, which I find quite diverting.
100 most influential? I havent had one person on those lists influence me in any way.
