Took my wife to a gun show, and she fell in love with a Russian Beauty!

Posted on 01/15/2011 5:43:19 PM PST by TexasBarak

A Mosin-Nagant, that is! She's old, and a bit rugged, but even my wife fell in love with it and got excited. It was right at closing time, and she encouraged me to buy it then, instead of coming back, because it might not still be there tomorrow! Ya Gotta love a woman like that!

Consider well before you modify anything. Your rifle may have been at Stalingrad.

How would you know? My M38 was made in 1942. It could have been anywhere.

The stock cracked on it right behind the receiver the first time I went to the range. Spent $150 plus shipping at Cheaper than Dirt for 440 rounds of Hungarian surplus and a new Monte Carlo style stock for it. That stock pretty much took all the nasty out of the recoil on that short carbine. It's no problem to put 70 rounds through it in one morning and still be able to use my arm that afternoon. ;-)

Spooky. I went to Google and typed female, then Soviet. Before I could type the third word, Google instantly tacked sniper onto my query.

From flickr.com:

photo

Roza Yegorovna Shanina, female soviet sniper

Roza Yegorovna Shanina (Russian: Роза Егоровна Шанина, 1924 – January 28, 1945) was a Soviet sniper during World War II. She was responsible for 54 confirmed kills, including 12 enemy soldiers during the Battle of Vilnius.

Shanina had light brown hair and blue eyes.[5] After attending Arkhangelsk Teacher's Training College, she became a mentor in the kindergarten. Then, she voluntarily joined the Vsevobuch and later the Central Female Sniper Academy in Podolsk. On June 22, 1943, Shanina enlisted in the Red Army and on April 2, 1944, joined the 184th Rifle Division, where a separate female sniper platoon was formed. Once, upon receiving a battalion commander's order to immediately return to the rear, Shanina replied "I will return after the battle". The words later became a title of the book From The Battle Returned by Nikolai Zhuravlyov. Shanina died in a battle near the khutor of Rikhau. Her battle diary and several letters have been published. Streets in Arkhangelsk and in the settlements of Shangaly and Stroyevskoye were named after her.

Shanina had four brothers, but only one survived the war.

I’m afraid I hate the ruskies. Evil bastards. A great-uncle of mine was nearly captured by the russians. Narrowly got away.

Ah, good for you! Your wife will definitely enjoy shooting the old Babushka! The Russians have a certain allure. They have a tendency to be magnetic as well. My 91/30 somehow attracted a couple of M44s and a Finnish M38.

I guarantee that you will find cosmoline when you take the stock off. BTW, the original stock finish is shellac. Rockler Garnet Red is a perfect match, for touching up after your woodworking job.

Oooh, I saw in the last catalog I got from them that they had aftermarket stocks for MN's- Thanks for the testimonial! Is yours the synthetic variety?

"I’m afraid I hate the ruskies. Evil bastards"

They were worse than Nazis in my opinion. But they had an all-business battle rifle. I like my Finnish Mosin...built for the Czars, captured and used against the Bolsheviks. Nice irony.

Hmmmmmm. Scratched into the stock on mine was “For good time, call Olga, phone # Gorky 427”. Mine really may have been at Stalingrad. :)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
That’s amazing! I have a german mauser with EXACTLY THE SAME THING scratched in the stock! Boy that Olga must’ve been something.
Medina Orange Oil from Lowes cleaned up the stock...
mmm, Rachel Weisz, yeah... she is the shnixnizzle.......
Hotter than my mini14 barrel after 100 rounds....
"The folks at 7.62x54r.net would not like to hear that."
LOL, tell me about it. I got on the **** list over there for refinishing my M44. Never mind that it had no finish left when I bought it, and I was refinishing it with original materials. I even invested in imported Mongolian garnet shellac and a boar-bristle brush to apply it, just like Ivan used in the first place.
BTW, it turned out looking factory fresh...and it fools every Mosin snob I show it to.
I got my M91/30 online for $69.95 + shipping. Tons of them still available. Took me about an hour to clean all the cosmoline off it. I’ll be shooting it for the first time tomorrow, along with my AR-15, Mini-14 and wait for it... wait for it... wait for it.. Glock 17 with standard capacity magazines (17 rd).
Be sure to have a safety check done by a gunsmith before you shoot it. A headspace check is a must. Happy shooting comrade !
