A Mosin-Nagant, that is! She's old, and a bit rugged, but even my wife fell in love with it and got excited. It was right at closing time, and she encouraged me to buy it then, instead of coming back, because it might not still be there tomorrow! Ya Gotta love a woman like that!
The 180 rounds of ammo were the remains of a can of 440 that he had opened and had been selling piecemeal.
All in all, I'm very happy with this purchase- I've been in the market for one of these since seeing discussed so much on here, and while the price wasn't great, it was still pretty reasonable. I am no perfectly equipped to take care of any wild pigs I encounter :)
Those are some damn good shootin’ rifles!
Mosins are fun to shoot. The recoil is a heavy hard push so you may want to invest in a $20 Walmart slip on recoil pad.
Also remember, that’s corrosive ammo. Bring a bottle of Windex with you and hose down the bore and breech face when you’re done.
Oh, and last winter we(NJ gun forums group) shot the mosins, PSLs etc. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2IxdDQSCQ24 Bit of a language warning at the end.
Have fun!
I bought mine about seven years ago from Big 5 for about $79. It’s big, heavy, reasonable accurate and a blast to shoot with cheap ammo. It would be good for hunting venues, but I’ve never hunted with mine.
Mine is a 1942 91/30. Got the rifle, pouches, sling, oil can, bayonet. With tax and background check, I was out the door for $135.00.
Come back and give us a report after you get to the range with it! Again, congrats!
Didn’t one of the Women Snipers have over 300 kills with one of those things?
Nine replies inside of fifteen minutes on a Saturday night- ya gotta love Freepers!
LOL- yes I am! The scary part is that she's a slightly better shot than I am! I asked her if she'd be wanting to shoot it- she says "after you put a pad on it!". No dummy, my missus!
oh. nevermind.
You can get a surplus tin of 440 rounds for under $100 if you look around. It was worth the money if you got one with the cosmoline already removed.
Big Five had them on sale over Christmas for that exact price, but they ran out, and had not recieved any more as of this week- and wouldn’t promise me the same price, anyhow.
Being cleaned of cosmoline was big selling point for me- probably worth the extra twenty or thirty bucks. Anyhow, I was out the door with a powerful rifle and 180 rounds of ammo for $175, so I’m a happy camper!
Consider well before you modify anything. Your rifle may have been at Stalingrad.
Cheaper than Dirt has them right now for $96. Being as I'm in the same state as them (Texas), with sales tax and shipping, it'll probably run me $120 to $130 altogether- still not bad.
It might have been used to shoot zeks at Kengir too. Commie guns are bad karma IMO. Always check your Mak for neck hairs on the muzzle.
The Moison-Nagant looks like it was fabricated in a blacksmith shop but shoots very well. A suggestion, the surplus Russian ammo is OK for blasting, provided you clean it properly, but there are some commercial producers of the 7.62X54R ammo> Sellers-Beloit comes to mind. It is pricier than the surplus ammo but is accurate. This is true of many of the surplus rifles on the market. The surplus ammo available is often of, at best, borderline quality. Many of these rifles will surprise you with decent ammo. Had a Turkish Mauser in 8X57mm that looked like in had been dropped many times in basic training but with good commercial ammo, would print 6” at 200 yards with issue sights and aging eyeballs.
