Would there have been fewer victims?
Was there an opportunity to stop the shooter?
your supposition is a non starter.....
just sayin.....
Owning and being able to shoot is one side, the game changes when facing a armed opponent at close range shooting at you,She needed some Ex Cops or Military.
Did Gabby's aides have a chance, or was everyone doomed from the start?
Aides are different from security people. Think about how you react to a sudden loud noise. You jump. Once the jumping is over, you then take stock of the situation. In the Tuscon case, the noises continue and you continue jumping and being jostled about by crowd members as your own instincts tell you to get away fast.
From the standpoint of a determined shooter, there was no jumping, he just keeps firing. Depending on his mindset, he is either firing as fast as he can pull the trigger before the crowd is able to disperse, or he is firing aimed shots. My suspicion is his first one or two shots were aimed and then he fired as fast as he could. That Rep. Giffords took a brain shot at point blank range with a 9mm and survived tells me the shooter was using non-expanding ball ammo. Many of the victims were probably hit by the same bullet.
Yet....
I DO appreciate the answers of the folks who were willing to contribute.
I’m familiar with Mr. Zamudio. Sounds like a smart guy.
Thanks for the input, fso301.
You raise a valid point; and it is one on which I am not schooled. Maybe in CCW classes, they get into this. If someone is out there reading this and there is a standard answer to fso's question, please expound.
Meanwhile, as I'm thinking this through this past week, my best answer is this: I know there is just one shooter. NOW, I've shot HIM and he is plumb down. I'm now holstering my gun and putting my hands up in the non-threat position. Everyone sees I'm not a threat, most witnesses see that I've shot the perp. I'm very unlikely to get shot.
OTOH, if I'm standing there with a smoking gun, and I'm adrenaline-pumped, the big "uh-oh they're shooting me now" scenario is somewhat likely. Tough question. We need some reasonable answers.

i was just kindin....but i'll play
had they had guns......they would have immediately formed a posse and gone after the responsible party......
Sarah, Glenn, Rush, GW.......
Just a guess, but she would have gotten shot, and then laughne would be dead, no other people harmed.
/”bald guy with the crazy glare”/
Hey, watch it.
I resemble that remark.
kindin = kiddin.....
I heard him say that.
Since he didn't shoot.... Does that mean his "sixth sense" caused him to hesitate long enough to get input from others?
Doubtfull
Consider the entire rampage was over in only seconds
CCW holder would have had to been close in near Giffords &
others, would have had to have a clean shot at the shooter
Problematic
Or course could have “double tapped” the POS afterwards to
save cost of trial....
“What would have happened, if Gabby’s assistants had guns and knew how to use them?”
run the other way!
I'm always asking questions about things I know nothing about.
Sometimes I embarrass myself.
But, then, I remind myself of my mother-in-law's admonition that it is a good idea to ask questions.
Thanks for the input, njslim.
That. And his CCW training kicked in.
Just my opinion.
Given that this will be a federal prosecution, and a federal judge was killed, some might question where an appropriate venue would be. I would have to trust to the objectivity of any federal judge presiding.
