His villians, (bad cops, reporter, leftie mom) remind me of Jared Loughner - crazy leftists.

I haven't finished the book yet, but I think he is setting up for the hero to be a dog!!!! Even better!

Cool.

This book would have been rejected for publication a few years ago (and not too many years ago either)

"Dean Koontz has been slipping conservatism into his recent books."

Recent? Koontz has woven some pretty conservo-libertarian themes into his books for as long as I can remember (probably going on at least 20 years).

He loves his dog, too :-)

When I was younger, I used to read all Dean Koontz’s books. The one with Egler Vess (something like that) and the camper haunts me to this day. Can’t remember the name of it. Anyway, now I don’t like that kind of books or movies anymore (real life is scary enough), but there was a time when I had read every book Dean Koontz had ever written.

Interesting you post about Dean’s latest book as I’m in the process of reading it right now. I’m not sure how much I’m liking it, but I adore Dean Koontz and support him in every way possible. He’s a good man.

I can’t think of one Koontz book that I hated. I think I still like Watchers the most. I was also pleasantly surprised by the Frankenstein novels.

Dogs have frequently been the heroes or at least major characters in Koontz's books and he nearly always has his golden retriever at his side in the cover photos. But personally, my favorite is the Odd Thomas series. Religious faith plays a large part in his novels and he clearly delineates between good and evil. The occult is never glamorized but is always shown as evil in source, intent, and effect.

I’ve run out of the worthwhile Stephen King stuff. Is Dean Koontz any good?

The hero being a dog is pretty common for Dean Koontz - one more reason to like him.

I didn’t know that about Koontz. Makes me like him even more.

The thing about Koontz is that his evil is REAL, very little supernatural stuff in his books. Not to say that it isn’t there, but, I find real monsters like Voss or the Psycho lovers in Dark Rivers to be MUCH more scary than say Pennywise or some of King’s other baddies.

I personally think ‘Midnight’ was the scariest, but, Intensity and Dark Rivers were close second.

I’m having a hard time reading more than a chapter or two of this book at one sitting. It’s almost too intense to try to read more at a time. Is this happening to you, too? I usually devour his books, get nothing done, until I’m finished. But this one.......

You can tell he loves dogs. They have been in several books, including my first Koontz book “The Watchers”.
