Since the season is more than month away, and information is incomplete, this is a preliminary post. When more information develops, I'll post the "formal" announcement.

Wikipedia article

Survivor: Redemption Island is the 22nd season of Survivor. It begins Wednesday, February 16, 2011 on CBS.

This season introduces a new twist:

From Wikipedia: When a contestant is voted off their tribe, instead of leaving the game, they are taken to the area known as Redemption Island. There, they will have to sustain themselves in the same manner as when they were with their tribe, living on limited food and water supplies and shelter. When the next contestant is voted off, they are also sent to Redemption Island, and the two people will face off in a duel challenge. The winner remains in the game, living at Redemption Island, while the loser is finally removed from the game. At pre-determined points in the game, the person at Redemption Island will have a chance to return to the game and be reunited with the remaining players in the game.

There is also a rule change. If a player quits during the jury phase, the producers reserve the right to not allow that player to serve on the jury.

Here is a video from last season's finale where Jeff Probst explains the twist.

This season takes place in the same location as last season: in the vicinity of San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua.

CBS has announced sixteen of the eighteen players for this season. The other two players yet to be named will be "former castaways." The rumors are that those two players will be Rob Mariano (Boston Rob) and Russell Hantz - and that they will each captain a team (video). If true, this would be the third appearance for Russell and the fourth appearance for Boston Rob.

Ten of the sixteen players are from Southern California.

Ometepe Tribe: Andrea, Ashley, Francesca, Grant, Kristina, Matt, Natalie, Phillip

Zapatera Tribe: David, Julie, Krista, Mike, Ralph, Sarita, Stephanie, Steve

Just a guess - production staff.

Who goes to RI will be determined after tonight’s TC - the end of the show.

We should not see a RI competition until next week.

Then again I could be wrong and TC is in the second to last segment and the RI competition is the last segment.

So, everybody - look for the dark shorts.

I didn't notice those dark shorts tonight so you're probably right.

If you have a lit lantern in one hand, do you really dig around for a flint?

I was saying that as she was using the lantern to look for the flint. Wife was ‘Oh, that must be a battery lantern”

Sigh.......

“If you have a lit lantern in one hand, ...”

I was LMAO over that. She was holding the “fire material” so close to the lantern it almost caught on fire by accident.

I’m yelling “You moron!”

LOL

Two great episodes! Hope it continues the rest of the season.

Matt probably learned through school sports and it became second nature to shake hands with the competiton. Rob probably saw it as 1) a way to play up breaking up the “couple” 2) a fast pass to getting rid of his own personal competition and 3) Matt might have won brownie points at merge. The problem now is they’ve booted off two players that would have helped them win pre-merge challenges. Rob’s playing a game only for himself rather than keeping the numbers for the merge. Perhaps he understands he doesn’t have much of a chance to make it to the end so is merely looking to get past as many TCs as he can, but I don’t think that’s the wisest strategy.

Phillip is still an idiot. What a bozo having his little group speech and acting all big man on island. Of course, Jeff likes him - he makes good tv. No, Jeff, Coach was too b-o-r-i-n-g to be Phillip but they are brothers from another planet. Whew, the nation’s security is better now that he’s retired/fired/quit/vacationed out to the funny farm. If he can’t keep a little alliance secret for a couple hours how could he keep state secrets. Rob is just keeping him around as a pawn until folks start looking his way.

Glad to see Ralph found the II. Russell is going to get antsy when he can’t find it. Perhaps he’ll suspect his “girls” are keeping it from him... oh, that would send him into a tizzy.

What was Francesca writing in her journal? It looked like code or figuring something. I stopped the video but it was too blurry to read.

I was disappointed to see on “Causes” at Jeff Probst’s blog that he/they are supporting a No H8 campaign, so-called, to work against Prop 8 being upheld in California.

Of course it is ok to H8 the reinforcement of the traditional marriage.

So, no more visits to his blog. I worked hard to help Prop 8 pass and I don’t hate anyone. I just love God and His institutions.

I think I have figured out why I like Russell. I like his honesty. Not to his tribemates; he has no honesty with them. I like his honesty to the camera. He says what most everybody else is thinking.

During an interview, Russell said something like, “He thinks he knows how to play? He’s playing with ME!!” All arrogant.

Then they interviewed Rob and he let slip basically the same sentiment.

Don’t get me wrong, I like Rob too, but I have always wondered why I am one of the few who like Russell. I think I know now. I find the honesty refreshing.

Russell has declared he is playing the exact same game as before, and I don’t see why he doesn’t realize he will probably get the exact same result.

Rob’s tribe voting off Matt was stupid and too calculated for so early in the game. Matt was an asset. Hang in there, Matt.

I really like Francesca, too. Now that Matt and Francesca are both on Redemption Island, I don’t know who I hope beats the other in whatever duel they may have.

I don’t see Phil as honest or dishonest. I see him as nutty.

His sincere patriotism moves me, though.

I noticed that right away. I figured others would notice it too.

I agree. Rob should have stuck with his original plan and voted off chatterbox nutcase Phillip.

BTW, I too am a Russell fan.

It is interesting to see the Pro vs Anti Russel crowd at the CBS forums.

The Anti Russel crowd feel ‘ol Rooster is going to take Russell out this week.

I don’t think it will be that easy.

Rob’s playing a game only for himself rather than keeping the numbers for the merge. Perhaps he understands he doesn’t have much of a chance to make it to the end so is merely looking to get past as many TCs as he can, but I don’t think that’s the wisest strategy.

My thoughts on Rob's strategy at this point: I think he's figured out that he has no direct path that gets him from his tribe through the merge and to the final three. Too many weak players on his team, too many weak players attached to him. So I think his strategy has evolved to a plan to decimate his own tribe as far as possible, perhaps even voting out one member of his alliance if the gals don't like someone, then he himself falling upon the 'sword' of being voted out.

He's probably made the assumptions that Redemption Island challenges will be mostly puzzle based, which he excels at, vs physical challenges where producers would have no clue as to the makeup of either side, and it could easily be seen as being unfair. He's also got enough skills to survive well in such a situation, supplementing his rations of rice with food or fish, and keeping his strength in reserve for his return. He's also likely figured that his alliance might make it to the merge (especially if a tribe is so far down on members), and he'll have pre-stacked the jury with members of his alliance.

I'm sure he figures that coming back as the stranger in a post merge and likely Russel dominated game, he'll find it easy to peal off Russel's support and make it to the final three and possibly win the game.

Some deep thoughts there kingu.

I think one of the reasons I like Survivor is how in the blink of an eye things change so drasticly. A person’s well laid out plan is shattered and they can not recover.

I think that is one of the reasons I like Russell - and other players like him - who just because the numbers are against them they don’t give up and find a way to split somebody off from the larger group.

In a group of five somebody knows they are number “5” and are ripe for plucking.

There is never justification, to me, to throw an immunity challenge, ever. There's just no reason to. No matter how annoying someone is, how little they do around camp, whatever, it doesn't matter. Throwing an immunity challenge is making your opponents one man stronger. More if you add in whatever luxury items they win.

To me, there is a trifecta of bonehead moves in Survivor. 1) Giving away immunity. 2) Giving away immunity. And 3) Giving away immunity. Giving away immunity by throwing a challenge, giving away immunity by giving up immunity, or giving away immunity by giving someone an idol.

Have a plan if you lose a challenge, sure, that's just simple playing the game. Having a plan to lose a challenge? That's cutting your own throat. Now, every time it rains, they're going to think about that tarp. Every time someone sits on a rock or a log, they're going to think about those chairs. Every time they have to smell that rolled up wad of dirty clothes, they're going to think about those pillows. And every time they stumble in the dark, they're going to think about those lanterns, and the people who came up with the bonehead plan that gave those things away to the other tribe.

Idiots.

Agree with throwing challenges.

I think Russell and his two did a good job in picking # 6.

I just don’t think # 6 realized it’s better to be # 4 than to be # 6.

Well, the tribe made their bed - without a trap and three blankets - now they have to sleep in it.

I am going to be laughing my but off if Russell wins at RI and his old team gets skunked in the IC. I’m sure one of R’s two girls will be joining him.

I admired Russel’s tenacity with the fake idol thing and the attempt to peel off “the old lady.” It very nearly worked and I was impressed. His ability to figure out the challenge was thrown and to count the votes and foresee with the six would do was just, I repeat myself, impressive.

Watch the challenge again. While Russell gives the “WTF we lost” face at the end - look a few minutes earlier. He was looking at the other guys with a “whats up with this” look.

He knew right as the challenge ended that the 6 threw it away to get him.

I think Russell’s big mistake this season was waiting until too late to try and plant his Russell Seed. He should have been talking on the side to who he thought was 5 & 6. Planted that little “Just where do you stand with the others”.
