Since the season is more than month away, and information is incomplete, this is a preliminary post. When more information develops, I'll post the "formal" announcement.

Survivor: Redemption Island is the 22nd season of Survivor. It begins Wednesday, February 16, 2011 on CBS.
This season introduces a new twist:
From Wikipedia: When a contestant is voted off their tribe, instead of leaving the game, they are taken to the area known as Redemption Island. There, they will have to sustain themselves in the same manner as when they were with their tribe, living on limited food and water supplies and shelter. When the next contestant is voted off, they are also sent to Redemption Island, and the two people will face off in a duel challenge. The winner remains in the game, living at Redemption Island, while the loser is finally removed from the game. At pre-determined points in the game, the person at Redemption Island will have a chance to return to the game and be reunited with the remaining players in the game.
There is also a rule change. If a player quits during the jury phase, the producers reserve the right to not allow that player to serve on the jury.

This season takes place in the same location as last season: in the vicinity of San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua.
CBS has announced sixteen of the eighteen players for this season. The other two players yet to be named will be "former castaways." The rumors are that those two players will be Rob Mariano (Boston Rob) and Russell Hantz - and that they will each captain a team (video). If true, this would be the third appearance for Russell and the fourth appearance for Boston Rob.
Ten of the sixteen players are from Southern California.

This phony only played 2 years at So. Cal (2001 & 2002) and had only 15 pass recptions during that time.
Played in the NFL? Not really, he was on the roster of the San Diego Chargers for 6 games but never played in any of them...........Now he's a YOGA instructor? Holy cow, that's definitely a resume enhancing job experience isn't it?
I'm getting sick and tired of all these hollywood wannabe's trying to strike it rich on this Survivor program...........

(I am referencing the universal you in my comment here, not you personally...so please don’t read it that way.)
I think you could make the argument that Russel was one of, if not THE, most competitive players. But what Russell can’t get through his think cro-magnum head is that, to be considered THE BEST player, you have to at least win. He can whine and moan and stamp his feet all he wants, but there is one, and only one real objective in this game...to win.
For him to claim and to actually believe he is the best player ever is laughable. And Russel, I am laughing at you.

I want to see Rob & Russell battle it out on Redemption Island.
Damn, that was some “First TC”. Sorry to see Fran go. Surprised her mate didn’t play the Idol. And Phil? Anybody betting on which two from that tribe get the split votes next time?
And Robs comments? He’s got the little chickies grouped under his wing.
I noticed they are really pushing Redemption Island.
In past seasons they would have anywhere from 6 to 9, 1/2 minute commercials during every commercial break, but last night every break had a plug to sell the Redemption Island concept and only 2 to 3, 1/2 minute spots.
Sounds like they are trying too hard to get people to accept this “twist”.

I do think it adds an interesting switch. Nobody has seen just how this will work yet. It appears last night’s TC vote was along the usual lines but...............
Fran seems to be a strong player - and smart. She might just be able to hang at RI for a while if she can keep her head straight. Mighty lonely three days by yourself.
Might pay for the players to take into account how well a voted off person might do at RI.
Great first episode and what a Tribal Council! Right out of the gate on the first night!! Phillip is coo coo for cocoa puffs. I really don’t see him around for very long. Kristina is a female Russell and if she’s as conniving as Russell she’ll be around but the odds are against her right now. Francesca was mouthy from the get go, strong yes and would have been an asset if she could have toned down her comments. I won’t miss her.

Sure, it made for an hillarious TC but geez, it seems we’re stuck with that idiot Phillip for at least two more weeks. What a total wacko. To think this is what we have protecting this country?!?!?!?! If he couldn’t keep a secret for a few hours on a game show how the heck could he in the FBI? No wonder we’re in the shape we’re in. Maybe that’s why he’s an “ex” agent. What an idiot. Forget the muscle, they should have given him the boot first thing.
Whyyyyy did Kristina blab about the II? Whyyyy of all people she went to it had to be such a nimrod? I can’t believe she when out hunting for the II with a bag and a shovel. Talk about obvious. Rob asking for it, haha!
Too bad Francesca didn’t last longer. She had potential, but agree she should have toned it down. Here’s hoping she can make it back to the island but anyone coming back would have a hard time getting back with the in crowd. Still, if she could win every challenge and survive on her own for 30-some days then it would be difficult not to give her the million dollars.
Naw, it wouldn't be much of a contest. Unless it was a "find the idol", Rob would win it hands down and Russell would be carried away crying like a baby. What's with that new tattoo Russell is sporting? Obviously it has to do with Survivor but does anyone know what it is?
I liked Francesca right off - would love to work in the cubicle next to her sort of person. So I hope she makes it on Redemption Island.
I like the Redemption Island twist and am eager to see it play out.
I am one of the few weirdos who actually likes Russell - my whole family hates him - I can’t put my finger on why I like him. Because he is so brutally honest? Maybe that’s it.
Agreed, Phillip’s cheese has slid from his cracker. I almost wince watching him, because I don’t want to exploit the ill for my entertainment. I don’t think he’s well. I know he volunteered and everything.
I thought this first episode was GREAT and can’t wait for next week. Good times.
I was a Russell fan the first time he played and a kind of but not totally the second time. Maybe if they’d waited a year or so before bringing him back again I could get behind him, but I’m tired of him now. I’ve grown to like Boston Rob. Marriage and fatherhood seem to have mellowed some part of him. This was by far one of the best first episodes since Survivor started. Loved it!

I just watched the first episode online at cbs and I must say that tribal council was one of the best ever. The way Philip called out Kristina about lying about voting Rob out and then said she had the idol.. LOL! And the way Rob played her at that point by demanding the idol was pretty cool.
So now what do folks do about Phillip? Keep him in and close because you know he won’t lie? Or vote him out QUICKLY because you know he won’t lie?
I don’t see Phillip as honest so much as I see him as a stupid person who can’t keep his mouth shut. Probst just loves Phillip, though.

Phillip is a complete whack job.
In clip 1 - Redemption Island, I wonder which guys legs those are wearing the dark shorts. Is he the next RI member and if so, who?? White legs so it’s not crazy Phillip. Or, am I just reading too much into it ... that’s always a possibility.
