I'm attending a Symantec thing in Culver City, CA. The way the travel arrangements work out I'm going to have a free afternoon and evening one day and a free evening (until late) another day.
I'm interested in things I can do during those two periods of time. This is a group thing, but I'm traveling on my own.
I have a rental car. I’m not wild about driving around in that area though - I’m basically a country girl although I’ve lived in Washington, DC and currently live in Greensboro, NC. I loath the lack of courtesy in driver’s in big cities.
If you’re into art and old stuff, run 10 minutes north on the 405 to the Getty Museum.
Remember this: L. A. has square mile after square mile after square mile of dangerous ghettos plus much additional territory which is borderline. Culver City is borderline. L.A.’s South-Central area alone is larger geographically than most cities. It's extent is almost incomprehensible to many first time visitors.
The Getty is wonderful — especially on a clear day. Excellent suggestion.
Dinner at the Banana Leaf at The Grove in North Hollywood. FANTASTIC Malaysian food. The Gado-gado is wonderful, and the roti is awesome. The Beef Rendang is good too. Plus, there is a Pinkberry for frozen yogurt next to it.
The Griffith Observatory is nice. The Getty Villa you need tickets for (but they are free) is nice as is the main Getty art museum off the 405 in Santa Monica. Get tickets online.
Another, which would be ok if you choose the time carefully to avoid rush hour.....run 20 minutes north on the 405 and take the 118 west for another 20 minutes. Result: Ronald Reagan Presidential Museum, complete with his Air Force One.

Go to the Getty art museum. DO NOT go to South Los Angeles or the Westlake Park area. The Getty is really worth a visit.
Downtown culver city is hopping for restaurants. You and your colleagues should just stay around there. Going far a away to other parts of the city would be a waste.

If you have more time then drive west o. Washington to where the venice pier is and walk out on it if it’s not too cold.

There’s also the Norton Simon in Pasadena. You can take I-10 to the 110 which will take you all the way to Pasadena. This trip has the added advantage of letting you experience the Pasadena Freeway, Southern California’s most exciting roller-coaster!
If you just want to soak up local flavor you are already In the right place. Walk around the Venice canals. Mapped at link below

Read the history of how the canals came to be. Walk along the canals, bring some breadcrumbs for the ducks.
Then there is the freaky Venice beach boardwalk, and muscle beach (great photos for you guys on the rings or ropes?).

Driving around la is the worst part of the city and you are already in a very interesting (though liberal) part of the city with a lot to see and do..
LOL, to get much of anywhere from Culver you'll be driving the infamous 405 freeway. It's not too bad if you adjust to the pace and have a good GPS but don't expect much courtesy.
There's a lot to see in that area depending on your interests. Culver isn't far from the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (lots to see there if that's your taste), and the La Brea Tar Pits. If you're bursting with bucks or just want to see how the rich live, visit Rodeo Drive.
There's the famed Getty Museum just off the 405 and a bit further on you'll find Universal City with studio tours and many amusements/restaurants. You can head to Santa Monica to see the famous pier, dawdle on the beach (weather permitting) and go shopping/dining on the Third Street Promenade. Or check out the stereophonic sounds and smells of Venice with its Muscle Beach and other well known attractions.
That's just scratching the surface. Your hotel/motel will probably have dozens of brochures hawking various attractions including bus tours, etc. Have fun and let us know how you fare.
Lol you silly. But you know, ern, she will take 3-4 hours getting To and fro. Rr ranch. Not a Fun afternoon with that much driving. Venice has many sights, beautiful and weird.
