Niners were scared of Singletary

Fans who thought the 49ers were fighting some bad energy around Mike Singletary may have been on to something. With Singletary in charge, the 49ers often looked like a team that played tight and were afraid to make mistakes. "I think we did play tight," Vernon Davis said. "Guys were a little scared. They were more worried about coach Singletary getting on them than playing football." Interim coach Jim Tomsula made it his mission last week to get the 49ers to have fun. The 49ers responded with a 38-7 victory over the Arizona Cardinals.

There’s no way today Vince Lombardi would succeed with today’s spoiled players.

Can I be the next coach? I mean these guys stay for a season and a half, or two and and a half, get fired with enough cash to retire. Gimme the job!

Great players rarely are great coaches. I’m old enough to remember his heyday. The cameramen loved to zoom in on Singletary, right before the snap. He had fire in his eyes, every play, all the time. He looked like he wanted to axe-murder somebody.

He was a great football player, and has the potential to be a great coach. He should have spent some time as an assistant coach first. IMHO

Give me a break. Today's Lombardi is Bill Belichek who knows how to get the most out of his players. Singletary was a lousy coach who thought he could "motivate" his players to win. He was in WAY WAY WAY over his head....

The final straw was him fighting with Troy Smith on the sidelines during the St Louis game. He proved over and over again that he had no clue how to deal with QB’s....

I disagree, the most successful NFL coaches of the modern era emulate the stern, no-nonsense coaching style of Lombardi (Belichick, Coughlin, Parcells, etc.).

I think Lombardi would thrive in today's NFL.

Caoch Sing was quoted as saying “The quarterback is just another guy on the team”. That was probably true on the ‘85 Bears. He wanted a team modeled on his old Bear teams. Most of the guys on that Bear defense were All-Stars or Hall of Fame players. The ‘9ers only have one - Patrick Willis.

Singletary - great great player is his day but as a coach he’s much better as a D-coordinator. When your head coach moons his players in the locker room at halftime as a motivational tool, I think you can safely say he has run out of ideas.
