Rescue efforts are under way to evacuate more than 600 crew on 10 ships trapped in ice in the Sea of Okhotsk.

Signals are reported to have been received from a fishing boat and a research vessel which are in the greatest distress, stuck in the ice about 12 miles (19km) from the coast.

What happened to Global warming? I thought there wasn’t going to be any more ice.

Hey! B-b-but I thought the Arctic Passages were on the verge of becoming ice-free with the advent of Global Warming.

Meanwhile, the most despicable elements of the Regime Media (NY Times, ABC News) are propagandizing that Global Freezing is the result of man-made Global Warming.

Don't get too cocky. The Northwest passage did become ice-free this year, and the arctic ice was very low, generally. The Bering Sea has been slow to freeze up this year compared to the last several years, which were no record breakers, but had represented somewhat of a rebound, ice-wise, from the low ebb of summer 2007. All in all, there's nothing here to contradict the general trend of diminishing arctic ice.

The shield shape in the center is Banks Island, and the western terminus of the Northwest Passage is north of it. When the SS Manhattan made its traverse in September 1969 " Heavy sea ice blocked the way through McClure Strait, so a more southerly route through Prince of Wales Strait and south of Banks Island was used." You can see that this was all open water this year.

Somebody needs to call Al Gore about this, and ask if he also thinks this headline sounds like an unreleased Led Zepplin recording.

Smiling takes 6.
Pulling this trigger takes 2.
I'm lazy.

Ah! The ever-capricious ice.

I recall reading of the cruise of the RCMP schooner St. Roch in the 1940’s. 28 months going West to East, then 86 days going East to West.

Then again, we’re talking about the sort of people who think there’s an “Arctic Ice Cap”.

IIRC, the Russians have nuclear-powered ice-breakers, though I don’t know if they are operational today. When I was in Helksinki, Finland (in July, thankfully) there were modest numbers of icebreakers around. They are certainly aggressive, beefy-looking ships.

send all the politicians from DC there with all the hot air they spew they could warm the temarature in that region to balmy 70 degrees year round. while they are there they can be reeducated to be more than brainles, mindless nincomps they are today. In the meantime America would become prosperous again!

At the same time you have to 'splain what is meant by "sea ice" at any particular period of time. Everybody knows that you can run ice breakers through most sea-ice irrespective of the size of the area covered in any particular year. At the same time you maybe able to kayak right straight across the Arctic in mid-summer ~ but you wouldn't want to take a larger single hulled boat through that region.

Sea ice coverage has to do mostly with the extent of the zone of ice filled water which is at most 15% open water and 85% ice ~ of whatever thickness.

A stiff breeze can open up that sort of sea ice coverage and turn it into vast stretches of open water ~ irrespective of ambient temperature.

You get a different situation around Antarctica due to the tendency of the Circumpolar Cyclone to vector off ice pileups (through Hawking Radiation in fact) closer to the continent. This leads to some really bad weather, thicker ice, and a nasty picture all the way around.
