The state Department of Revenue plans to hike the 2011 penalty by about 9 percent for residents who are able to afford health insurance but fail to buy it.

Taxpayers ages 18 to 26 whose income exceeds $32,496 will see the penalty increase to $864, up from $792. For those ages 27 and older whose income exceeds $32,496, the penalty will rise to $1,212 annually, up from $1,116.

The fee, adjusted annually, doubles if two parents are in the family.

for residents who are able to afford health insurance but fail to buy it.

And who decides if one is able to afford insurance? The economic wizards that have bankrupted the state (and our country).

It would be funny were it not so damn sickening.

Where in MA does $32,496 make a thousand dollars a month in premiums “affordable”? With the cost of living there and the taxes, $32K is sustenance level.

When my daughter lived in Tacoma Park, MD a few years ago, she made $32k, paid nearly 40% of that in city, county, state and federal income taxes. Had to share a house with 2 other people and ride the subway. A car being way out of reach.

These political di*k heads don’t have an effing clue what it costs to live in the real world. Not worth the cost of the rope it would take to hang them.

I have to admit I find this amusing. They do deserve to get what they voted for. Good and hard

Hubby and I pay $7k a yr for insurance. The penalty of $2400 would be a lot cheaper. I am sure a lot of people see it that way.

I agree 100%. It sickens me to read this - the government deciding what somebody can afford. And notice there is no adjustment for the number of kids you have sucking off the system. A single person over 27 making over the $32k figure pays the same fine as some parasite over 27 making over the $32k figure with 5 kids sucking up resources.

The same is true for flat-rate water billing and so forth. You have a family of 7 living next door to a single person but both households pay the same for water and sewer each month.

The arrogance and stupidity of the government MAKES ME ILL!!!!!!!!!!!

Health care IS NONE OF THEIR BUSINESS!!!!!!!!!!!

Not worth the cost of the rope it would take to hang them.

Now, now, rope is very "green."

It will last, with care, through hundreds of "events."

Why does the fee double if there are 2 parents? Do they want to encourage divorce?

My husband and I pay over $1100 per month here in CA. That’s getting near twice what you and your husband pay.
