Merle Haggard on His Kennedy Center Honor, Meeting Obama and Oprah and More
Rolling Stones ^ | DECEMBER 28, 2010 | Patrick Doyle

It was also nice to meet Obama and find him very different from the media makeout. It's really almost criminal what they do with our President. There seems to be no shame or anything. They call him all kinds of names all day long, saying he's doing certain things that he's not. It's just a big old political game that I don't want to be part of. There are people spending their lives putting him down. I'm sure some of it's true and some of it's not. I was very surprised to find the man very humble and he had a nice handshake. His wife was very cordial to the guests and especially me. They made a special effort to make me feel welcome. It was not at all the way the media described him to be.

I'm sure some of it's true and some of it's not.

Here's a thought; figure out which parts are true and which are not.

If you've just met the president socially, no one expects you (or he) to be anything other than gracious. That doesn't mean his critics are wrong.

Its quite possible for someone to be perfectly nice in private life and still as wrong as wrong can be in terms of policy. And since this is not a monarchy, we're still allowed to try and throw the bum out of office.

there’s sunshine and blue sky And hopes are high There’s a blue bird atop a tree Singing loud for you and me He’s got a new note and a brighter note That we should sing and let ring

Dang.

The dude's on drugs.

Man gets awarded a Nobel Peace Prize before he's been in office one month and he's humble.

OF COURSE everyone's going to be nice at these public events.

Not SIR Paul McCartney at his White House concert where he took pot shots at George Bush.

He says that the media is calling the president names. The 400 journalists who were caught on the Journolist forum colluding to agree not to give him negative press during the election and to trump up racism charges against any conservative critics of BO to so beat down any criticism that all others would take it as a warning.

Yeah, that media.

The same one guilty of fabricating national guard memos during an October Surprise in 2004.

F’ Merle.

Paul was an Obama White House event when he trashed Bush. Obama agreed with the sentiments. Humble guy and all that.

Thats disappointing Merle. He stands against pretty much everything you ever advocated in your songs. Enjoy the accolades from the leftists that are sure to follow.

We went to a Merle Haggard show in Ruidoso this summer and really enjoyed listening to him sing all the old songs. There were no political statements made. Even at his age he can still sing like a young fellow.

What a burned-out dumbass.

Pity, I love his music.

All Presidents of late have been very nice guys if you meet them in person: Clinton, Bush, Obama. They’re professional politicians, they know how to kiss babies, talk a good line, smile, slap a few backs. It’s their damn policies that reveal who they really are.

Yeah, I like Merle Haggard's music. But I'm sure Adolph Hitler was kind to his dog, too. That didn't mean he was a nice guy.

I watched some of the ceremony on TV. I thought it was a gay thing at first because they wore rainbow ribbons around their necks. But really, who gives a sh*t what Merle Haggard thinks? He's obviously delusional.
