GREAT BRITAIN: Corvette HMS Celandine launched. (Dave Shirlaw)
GERMANY:
U-148 commissioned.
U-402 launched.
ITALY: Mussolini asks Hitler for German support against the Greeks in Albania. At first Hitler is prepared to send in one of his experienced mountain divisions, but then changes his mind and refuses to become involved.
CANADA: Corvette HMCS Galt launched Collingwood, Ontario.
AMC HMCS Prince David commissioned. (Dave Shirlaw)
U.S.A.: Vaughn Monroe and his Orchestra’s record of “There I Go” makes it to the Billboard Pop Singles chart. This is the first of his records to make the charts and it stays there for 4 weeks and rises to Number 5. (Jack McKillop)

ATLANTIC OCEAN: Light cruiser HMS Bonaventure spotted the German blockade-runner Baden (8204 GRT) en route from the Canaries to France and sank her by torpedo. A capture was not possible due to bad weather. (Dave Shirlaw)

Day 485 December 28, 1940
Operation Compass. Monitor HMS Terror bombards Bardia, keeping up pressure on the 40,000 beseiged Italian troops.
Luftwaffe bombing badly damages 2 destroyers under construction at Southampton (to be called Norseman and Opportune). Norseman is almost blown in half but will be repaired and commissioned into the Royal Australian Navy as HMAS Nepal on May 29 1942 (launched May 29 1942).
Destroyer HMS Valorous collides with minesweeping trawler HMT Libyan in Sheerness Harbour in the Thames Estuary. HMS Valorous will be repaired at Chatham until January 11 1941.

What would you bet, that we'll see no more stories like this between, oh, say, second half of 1941 and the end of the war?
Or maybe I'm wrong.
Maybe the fear of Communists survived despite our alliance with "Uncle Joe" Stalin, even in New York City?
And when was it, precisely, that the anti-Communists become "bad guys" in the eyes of the New York Times?
