With Christmas almost here I want to find a special "Grace" to say before dinner.
Apart from the one we said at catholic school - "Bless us O Lord for these Thy gifts..."etc., I found this one by Robbie Burns:-
O Thou who kindly dost provide
For every creature's want.
We bless Thee, God of nature wide,
For all Thy goodness lent:
And if it please Thee, Heavenly Guide,
May never worse be sent;
But, whether granted, or denied,
Lord, bless us with content. Amen!
Do Freepers have any favorites?
Dear God, thank you for the blessings you’ve heaped upon us: health, shelter, food and love, Amen.
I Jesu namn till bords vi gå
Välsigna Gud den mat vi få
Gud till ära, oss till gagn
Så få vi mat i Jesu namn.
(In Jesus' name to the table we go
God bless the food we receive
To God the honor, us the gain
So we have food in Jesus' name.)
Pass the bread,
Pass the meat,
Thank you, Lord,
now let’s eat!!
To fabulous food and those who prepare it,
but mostly to those with whom we share it.
When I was young I went to a non demominatational grammar school. When it was the Latin Master´s turn to oversea the the school lunch he always said:
Benedictus, Benedicat per Dominum Nostrum Jesum Christum - Amen
Father,
Bless this food to the nurishment of our bodies
As we give our bodies in your service.
In Christ’s Name,
Amen
I may not always say these exact words but the meaning never varies.
May our enemies feast on the flesh of their dead.
(You didn't think this thread was going to be all sweetness and light, did you?)
Non-denominational and oversee, sorry about that.
Sounds like a complaint.
"Oh Lord, this food sucks, may this please be as bad as it gets.."
I’m Lutheran, but raised by a pseudo-Catholic. That prayer (the real part) is basically Catholic - as usual for Lutheran.
Bless us, O Lord, with these, thy gifts
Which we are about to recieve
From thy great bounty
Through Christ, our Lord; Amen.
Bless this food to our use
And us to thy service
Make us ever mindful of the needs of others
Amen.
The psalm verse that precedes it is Psalm 145:15-16.
I will memorize this.
“For this day of the dear Christ?s birth, for its hours of home gladness and world gladness, for the love within these walls, which binds us together as a family, for our food on this table, for our surroundings in a land of freedom,we bring to Thee, our Father, our heartfelt gratitude.Bless all these, Thy favours, to our good,in Jesus? name. Amen”
How the hell are you supposed to memorize that in two days?
When I was young, my Grandpa taught us a simpler version of that prayer, but I had a Swedish friend in college who taught the full version.
(btw, how do you get the font to put the markings above your letters?)
Not with you around...LOL!
Merry Christmas.
