Wikileaks: Obama supported ousted Honduran Pres Zelaya to support Hugo Chavez
Wall Street Journal ^ | December 20, 2010 | Mary Anastasia

"The last year and a half of the [President Manuel] Zelaya Administration will be, in my view, extraordinarily difficult for our bilateral relationship. His pursuit of immunity from the numerous activities of organized crime carried out in his administration will cause him to threaten the rule of law and institutional stability."

—Charles Ford, U.S. ambassador to Honduras, May 15, 2008

Lots of hypotheses have been floated to explain why the Obama administration went to such extremes last year to try to force Honduras to reinstate deposed president Manuel Zelaya.

Now the release of two WikiLeaked cables from the U.S. embassy in Tegucigalpa strengthens one of those theories: that the U.S. knew Mr. Zelaya was a threat to democratic Honduras but had decided the country should tolerate his constitutional violations in the interest of realpolitik.

Practically speaking, Hugo Chávez was the man to please. After a decade in power, the president of Venezuela's influence around the region was notable. George W. Bush had clashed with him. Barack Obama was out to prove that they could get along, as evidenced by the warm handshake at the Summit of the Americas in Port of Spain in April 2009.

Honduras offered a bonding opportunity. Mr. Zelaya was a protégé of Mr. Chávez. Standing up for him as democratically elected was a way to score points with Latin America's hard left.

At a 2008 conference in Caracas, Venezuela's President Hugo Chávez hugs then-President Manuel Zelaya of Honduras.

.But Honduras wasn't willing to play the sacrificial lamb. When its other branches of government removed him from office last year, it caught Hugo Llorens, the U.S. ambassador, flat-footed. Saving face became the top priority.

So far Wikileaks has almost exclusively proved that our President and his cronies in power are amateurs and doofuses of the first order.

I’d like them to leak more.

You don’t think this is especially juicy? Not the exact information which conservatives knew already, but the source of this “new” information.

I mean here you are a liberal supporting Wikileaks and Assange only to find that your hero Obama is a dolt and his entire administration is founded on a policy of obsequiousness to dictators.

Actually, as I think about it liberals are always simultaneously sustaining opposing ideas in their heads. So maybe it isn’t a big deal after all.

But now you’ve got a Wikileaks article that you can email to your “independent” and liberal friends/colleagues, no?

You do have a training, re-education and outreach program for them don’t you?

Assange is mostly helpfull to those who wish to control the internet. He’s anarchist scum but he isn’t the one who betrayed America, that would be Manning and his handlers.

This is the real Obama, and not some media derived caricature.

They leaked the names and GPS locations of our assets in Afghanistan. They also leaked our countermeasures info against IEDs, and other info that is not a good idea to give to just anyone.

Unless you've been reading the actual leaked info and not what little bits have been filtered and regurgitated by our press [and what working American has time for that?], you are not getting as much out of these releases as are other interested [and hostile] parties who have skin in the game. It's not what we see that is bad, it's what isn't getting reported. Sins of omission go on in the press all the time.

We all loved the climategate emails but the reason these leftist whackoes released them isn't because they are Constitution-loving patriots, isn't because they are against the green movement- it is because they saw that corporations - "evil globalist capitalists" in their view- had found a way to profit from the green movement with the carbon credit trading scheme and government was going along with it. Their view had nothing to do with outrage over the loss of freedom for the individual that the global warming movement entailed, or outrage at the growth of government and government intrusion in people's lives, or outrage at supplanting established religion with the worship of Gaia.

We can certainly enjoy and use some of the revelations in the leaks but not all that Wikileaks will be in our interest. They are releasing what serves their interest, and their interests seem to be pretty much the same as Iran's, Brazil's and South Africa's.

You obviously have never read one of my posts. I have nothing to do with Wikileaks, but gave much effort toward sinking "Mel" Zelaya and those who promoted him.

"independent and liberal friends/colleagues"??

I have been in the trenches fighting lefties since the early 1980's. Began the battle with the shills for the Sandanista's stirring in the pot where I lived in NM. I saw the "liberation theology" scum trying to influence the local's in the mine/union town I lived in. We were 1 Republican to 5 Dems then, and I was the Republican County Chairman. I HATE LEFTIES....

Viva Honduras. Viva Mr. Michelletti. (the one with the balls) Bye Bye "Mel" Zelaya (Traitor)

FUBO! FUMEL! FULULA! FUOAS! Death to Traitors and Dictators! (that phrase was the rallying cry in Iran Election.)

I hereby rescind my "The White House is the source" assertion.

Fascinating.

I remember it like it was yesterday. (almost) That was our first look at how fascist and evil 0baMao was going to be based on an actual policy. No lie too big or outrageous. Hillary in it up to her humongous arse. Hang that freedom loving republic out to dry, to hell with the people who live there.

Precisely the confirmation obama didn’t want.

Not news, not a secret, but actual confirmation.
