The second big chill of the winter will set in this evening with temperatures plummeting far below zero and snow and ice causing widespread disruption across the country.
The rapid freeze has led the Met Office to issue severe weather warnings for the whole of the country on Thursday and Friday. They also expect it to remain bitterly cold well into the New Year.

That Global warming is a real killer.
Parties and fairs used to be held on the Thames. Let's all party like it's 1699!
Can’t be true. Climate scientists declared months ago that 2010 is the warmest year in history in the UK.
Haahahahahaa.
Last year some of the sea around southern England froze....someone posted a pic of a lady walking her dog on the frozen sea.
Month? This could go on for decades.
The Alarmists are about to see what really dangerous climate change is like.
I would love to see sufficiently cold weather for a sufficiently long time to actually freeze the river. The last frost fair was in 1814-15 (Dec - Feb). It would just kill GW to see another frost fair.
The Thames has only been frozen over deeply enough for a decent number of people to walk on it safely, during 25 of the worst winters in the past 600 years. It’s not as if that was ever a regular occurence; the water’s a lot cleaner and faster flowing now, and there’s more ambient heat.
Notwithstanding the bridges and water traffic slowing the surface water down, the Thames didn’t have embankments and wasn’t as well dredged, and it was so viscous with effluent that it didn’t so much flow, as ooze through London.
I’d love to see the Thames freeze over, but I’m not holding my breath.
1699

I was textin’ when I wrote this
Forgive me if it goes astray
But when I woke up this mornin’
Coulda sworn it was the Earth’s Day
The sky was all snowy
Granola peeps protestin’ everywhere
Tryin’ 2 run from the AGdub
U know I didn’t even care
‘Cuz they say one seven zero zero protest over
Doh! Out of time
So tonight I’m gonna ice skate like it’s 1699
I was skiing when I wrote this
So sue me if I go 2 fast
But ice is just a party
And ice wasn’t meant 2 last
Warming is all around us
My mind says prepare 2 fight
So if I gotta die
I’m gonna listen 2 Al Gore tonight
Yeah, they say one seven zero zero protest over
Doh! Out of time
So tonight I’m gonna ice skate like it’s 1699
Yeah
Lemme tell ya somethin’
If U didn’t come 2 protest
Don’t bother knockin’ on my door
Al goes a’lying on the TV
And baby he’s ready 2 roar
Yeah, everybody’s got a car
We could all die any day
But before I’ll let that happen
I’ll take their car away
They say one seven zero zero protest over
Doh! Out of time
We’re runnin’ outta time
So tonight we gonna, we gonna (Tonight I’m gonna ice skate like it’s 1699)
Say it 1 more time
One seven zero zero protest over
Doh! Out of time
No, no
So tonight we gonna, we gonna (Tonight I’m gonna ice skate like it’s 1699)
Alright, it’s 1699
You say it, 1699
1699
1699 don’t stop, don’t stop, say it 1 more time
One seven zero zero protest over
Doh! out of time
Yeah, Yeah
So tonight we gonna, we gonna (Tonight I’m gonna ice skate like it’s 1699)
Yeah, 1699
Don’tcha wanna go
1699
Don’tcha wanna go
1699
We could all die any day
I do wanna die
rather than breathe my life away
I take my hat off to you, Sir! Nicely done!
Global Warming on Free Republic
Sounds almost as lovely as the River Ankh "flowing" though Ankh-Morpork; thick & slow enough to raise cabbages in/on it and harvest them before they made it past the last bridge.
