Need some Freeper help here- I've seen this kind of thing mentioned on here before. My computer has become infected with a virus that tells me I have a "hard disk" problem, that can only be cured by registering their software (six or seven different versions, it would appear).
This happened to my wife a couple of months ago with her laptop- she went in under "safe" mode, downloaded and installed Malware Bytes, and the problem was solved. We did the same tonight with my computer, but it did no good. does anyone have any ideas?
Thanks in advance!
Please let me know what you find out: I have two older towers infected with a similar virus which makes them useless to me.
I had something like that many months ago. Was SO annoying took me hours to figure out what to do to get rid of it. Here is my suggestion, download Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware its a great program and its free. Download it, update it to the latest version, then go into safe mode and let it do a FULL scan, it will hopefully detect that particular virus and delete it, once its done deleting it, then you can reboot in normal mode. I had something similar a few months ago, told me that I had to download some application to get rid of it, turns out those applications are viruses as well
Also Spybot search and destroy is another free application that is great for removing that kind of spyware/malware garbage
Here’s a walkthrough on getting rid of it. It was just updated according to it’s date, so it should have the latest info for removing it:

I hate to be ‘that guy’, but really, install Linux Mint and be done with all this silliness.
Have you tried running chkdsk from the command line? It may tell you something useful.
Had a similar problem several months ago, nothing seem to work until I tried Malwarebytes ... did the trick for me. Try it, it’s free.
Had that. Reformatting was the only cure.
Guys, you can’t get rid of these kinds of problems from within an infected Windows environment anymore. You need to download a bootable antivirus to an empty CD or DVD and then turn on your system with that in the drive.
Download a couple of these and burn them. Use at least two and you can be pretty certain your system is cleaned.

My father somehow infects his computer minutes after he re-installs
Windows and every freeking program on the planet, then expects it to work.
I've never had this bug before, what are you using for email?
Ping
Grub By Device_ID cured me of Linux.
This happens for primarily two reasons:
1. You visited a porno site.
2. You visited a site to grab free music, games or software that normally folks pay for.
Malwarebytes + Avast/Kaspersky/TrendMicro is pretty good at getting rid of stuff like this.
Make sure you install Malwarebytes in safe mode with networking, update in safe mode with networking and run in safe mode. Then reboot again into normal mode with fingers crossed. (It’s best to download MWB using a clean machine that has a CD burner...)
=8-)
Both work well. I learned with XP/Win 7 to open the task manager ( Ctrl/ Alt/ ( tap only ) Del ) ASAP and kill the processes that look like the junk programs. Some have numbers in the name and most valid programs don't. Then download both above. Run in regular mode selecting quick scan first. Seems to work better than full scan in safe mode to clear up the problem. Then update both and run in safe mode/full scan to be sure.
Here's something that works well for vicious Google/Bing redirectors. Not an easy program to use but does solve that problem when nothing else works.
If all else fails—get a Mac!
Bump for reference.
I’ve been hit with viruses from time to time. My advice is to back up all your files and then take it to a pro to have it cleaned. I downloaded all those free programs and they did nothing for me. In fact, they fight against each other. I’ve forgotten which ones I used, but SpyBot was one of them. By the time I was done fooling around and turned it over to the Geek Squad, I had more than 15,000 viruses on my computer.
I now use a gizmo called “Click Free” that backs up my computer every day. I installed the multiple version of it on my network at the office. This gadget cost only $99 for the single version and about $150 for the multiple version — available at Best Buy.
I also have Carbonite, advertised by Hannity and Rush, that backs up my files off site. That works, and I restored my work computer with it a couple of months ago when I was blind sided by a virus that just came in and zapped my while I was working. I’m not quite sure why my network consultant had me install the second program.
superantispyware solved problems for me that malwarebytes missed. Good luck
