I say Lee Marvin hands down. He was just cool and never thought he had to prove it.

If there was no Lee Marvin, there would be no Steve McQueen, James Coburn or Clint Eastwood.

Hollywood works on ‘Types’ to mold and market actors after.

First there was Lee Marvin (Tall, weathered, raw boned with hard blue eyes) and all after have held their own, but NONE have surpassed Lee.

Jack.

Those actors back then knew that if it wasnt for regular people, they would be pumping gas or driving a truck.
Now these actors think they are the new gods. Little do they realize that the next new god is right around the corner.

Thanks for this thread!

Although I don't know who was 'cooler' (I loved them both) it was a fun trip down memory lane!

Makes me want to go out an get all the old movies. Hmmmm, I wonder if the Apple TV 2 would come in handy for this???

Not exactly a tough guy but Peter OToole in Murphys War was a great bit of cinema.

Just a lowly maintenance crewman, he pits his revenge and tests the very limits of himself.

Murphy's War

BTW this was filmed in Venezuela, where there is a real war brewing.

I wonder what would happen if you threw Charles Bronson into the mix. Now that would be a tough one.

Let’s see... McQueen was able to do his role in “The Magnificent Seven” only because he crashed his car deliberately (with his wife in the passenger seat) to take a sick leave from something else he was obligated to do.

James Coburn was cooler than Steve McQueen.

Lee Marvin was cooler than James Coburn.

Cary Grant made up a metaphor, that Hollywood has been like a bus, with people getting on, enjoying the ride for a while, then getting off (dying).

But he said, Gable’s driving the bus. And at the time of the interview, Gable had been dead twenty years.

The Big Red One was the true life story of the director, the amazing Sam Fuller. The guy had an amazing life and he fought for a long time to get that movie made.

One of my old bosses was in the film operation petticoat with Grant.

He said he was just like he was on film in real life.

he(grant) a poor orphan kid and made his life what it became.

Brilliant comedian, and a true life tough guy.

Actually the Kings of Cool were Dean Martin and Steve McQueen.
Lee Marvin for all he was never really had that air of “Cool” about him as Martin and McQueen did.
