JOHANNESBURG (AP) An acclaimed outdoorsman who wrote movingly about testing himself against nature is presumed dead after a crocodile snatched him from his kayak while he led an American expedition from the source of the White Nile into the heart of Congo.
Two Americans being guided by 35-year-old South African Hendrik Coetzee on the grueling trip could only watch in horror. They paddled unharmed to safety after the Tuesday morning attack on the Lukuga River in Congo.
The International Rescue Committee, which runs development projects in the Central African nation, helped evacuate the Americans to a nearby town, Ciaran Donnelly, the organization's regional director in Congo, said Thursday.

Treadwell was an odd bird, but the Werner Herzog documentary was good. After watching it, I checked out Herzog's documentary "Little Deiter Must Fly" which was even better.
If it was anything like my kayak it didn’t survive the attack either.
Dunno, but I would hope my last words weren't, "Get this f*%$ing thing off of me!!"...;^)
I’ll check it out. I loved the fox scene.
Well, the audio was inherited by his “business partner”. She says she has never heard it. And she claims she will never release it. So it comes down to legal ownership.
I’m sure it’s awful. I would listen to it.
Did you see the photos online of his leg? [continuing with the maudlin theme].
Think thats bad, I hit my thumb w/a stapler this morning!
I test myself against nature every day. In the winter I turn on the heat. In the summer I turn on the AC. I have a fridge to preserve food. I have a lawn mower to tame the jungle.
Shoes protect my feet.
A vacuum cleaner helps keep nature out of my house, as do dust cloths and various cleaning sprays. If we have ants, we put out traps. D-con is great for mice. (Cats work too, but they are brutal on carpet. Plus they are mean.)
There is a long list of tools I use to keep nature at bay.
So far I’m winning.
Old
Yes, but the really key point is, are you prepared for the next time a crocodile invades your house?
Here in Nevada we're doing a pretty good job of keeping the crocs at bay. Proud to say I've never had a croc invasion, but there's always tomorrow...;^)
Old or young, it makes sense to die doing what you like in life.
minus the being dragged off into the water by a croc while screaming like a banshee.
I don’t know whether I’d listen to it or not. Probably, in the context of the movie I reckon. I can see why Herzog didn’t do that, both for an effect in the movie and otherwise, though.
No, I didn’t see the leg...can’t say as I want to either!
God bless him.
Fregeards
As a Sergeant do you really need to hear all the versions of death that are possible when seeking an action filled, adventurous life, they are endless, and they are rarely pleasant, or pretty, that is partly what gives that life it’s appeal, facing those horrible deaths that others won’t.
Yeah, it’s a real horror story. I wonder if the girl started having second thoughts but was stuck out in the woods with her guy who was really a nut, and just didn’t put her foot down in time.
Freegards
Here in Tampa, we often go kayaking on the Hillsborough River. Gators are fairly common. The Congo crocs are HUGE by comparison, and more aggressive.
Apparently not the taste test.
Governor Schwarzenegger appears to be doing fine.
