I quit cold turkey several years ago. We can’t smoke at work, I didn’t want to smoke at home with the daughter seeing me, so the only time I had a chance was when I’d go fishing.

I had about half a pack of stale cigs in my glove compartment that were about two weeks old. I lit one, promptly put it out and threw the rest away. Never lit another one since.

Hey, bozo, there’s space for two more butts up your nose.

You got that right. And his ear too!

Has anyone ever known a smoker in their entire lives who, “almost completely quit”?

I worked with a man for about 15 years before he told me he was a smoker, in those days we were allowed to smoke on the job. I asked how come I'd never seen him smoke and he said he only smoked at home on his porch after dinner - one cigarette and some days he'd skip that one cigarette. He told me he averaged about a pack a month.

I asked him how long he had his "pack a month habit" and he said about 30 years. I knew him to be an honest man or I would not have believed him. He's in his mid 70s now and I have actually witnessed him having an after dinner cigarette - on his porch.

Some self-hypnosis also helped.

I had a friend who used the hypnosis method. Someone ones told me that the only way anyone can quit, is you really WANT to quit.

I had been thinking about quitting for nearly a year.

One night, I coughed myself awake and naturally went out to the kitchen for a smoke. I discovered the carton was empty, so I went out to the car to get my “hide-away” pack, but I hadn't had a chance to hide one in the new car.

Back inside, I found the shirt I'd been wearing and two Winstons were in the shirt pocket package. I decided to smoke one right then and to smoke the very last one in the morning (and went back to bed.) This was the self-hypnosis I mentioned.

I smoked the last one the next morning, crumpled up the pack and threw it in the trash. I didn't tell anyone about my decision, having been unmercifully pimped about taking up the habit after previous announcements fell through.

The worst of it was over in about three weeks. (everything tasted good.)

About three months later, some friends noticed I wasn't lighting up and instead of jeers, I got cheers for quietly chucking tobacco.

I could care less whether he smokes, or not. Given his age, I guess I would prefer that he continue smoking - the burden he will put upon the taxpayers as a former president will be lessened by his lessened life expectancy.
