At the end of November something historically quite significant happened in Russia. The State Duma passed a statement conceding Soviet responsibility for the Katyn Woods massacre, one of the 20th centurys worst war crimes.
The roots of this atrocity date to September 1939, when the Nazis and Bolsheviks jointly invaded, annihilated, and partitioned Poland. The Soviets seized thousands of Polish military officers as prisoners.
Their fate was sealed on March 5, 1940 when Stalin signed their death warrant, condemning 21,857 of them to the supreme penalty: shooting. This we now know conclusively through the surviving NVKD document. The officers were taken to three execution sites, the most infamous of which bears the namesake of the crime: the Katyn Forest, 12 miles west of Smolensk, Russia. There, these Polish men were slaughtered. The Bolsheviks covered their crime with a layer of dirt.
The recent apology from the Dumaplus a pledge by President Dmitri Medvedev to visit Poland this monthwas something Poles waited decades to hear. It was something many of us who have studied and written about this incident have waited to hear. And it is too bad that Franklin Delano Roosevelt is not around to hear it.
FDR? Yes, FDR. Let me explain.
The Katyn massacre was first exposed by the Nazis in April 1943. By then, the Nazis had betrayed the Hitler-Stalin Non-Aggression Pact. They discovered the mass graves, and immediately converted the atrocity into a propaganda coup to split the Big Three Allies. The Soviets, in turn, claimed the Nazis had done the crime. Stalin and his goons attempted to pin the massacre on Hitler and his goons. Stuck in between was the civilized world, which sought to determine which devil had done the deed.
FDR was among those stuck in between. Where would he stand?

I consider General George Patton as one of the most visionary men in the USA whose opinions about the Communists were totally ignored by the politicians ( under both the FDR and Truman administration ).
After he helped crushed the Nazis, Patton was quick to assert the Soviet Union would cease to be an ally of the United States and warned about their duplicity.
He was concerned that some 25,000 American POWs had been liberated from POW camps by the Soviets, but never returned to the US.
In fact, he urged his superiors to evict the Soviets from central and eastern Europe. Patton thought that the Red Army was weak, under-supplied, and vulnerable, and the United States should act on these weaknesses before the Soviets could consolidate their position.
In this regard, he told then-Undersecretary of War Robert P. Patterson that the “point system” being used to demobilize Third Army troops was destroying it and creating a vacuum that the Soviets would exploit. “Mr. Secretary, for Gods sake, when you go home, stop this point system; stop breaking up these armies, Lets keep our boots polished, bayonets sharpened, and present a picture of force and strength to these people, the Soviets. This is the only language they understand.”
Asked by Pattersonwho became Secretary of War a few months laterwhat he would do, Patton replied: “I would have you tell the Red Army where their border is, and give them a limited time to get back across. Warn them that if they fail to do so, we will push them back across it.”
Needless to say, he was totally ignored ( in fact, asked to shut up ), and the rest is history.
Unfortunately, men like Patton are hard to come by even in today’s military.
Ping.
There was ever very much question about that.
Stalin may have been an SOB, but he was FDR & Harry Hopkins SOB.
I don’t think naive is the right word. Complicit would be closer.
It is possible to make an argument that picking a fight with Stalin in late 1945 made military sense.
It is not possible to make a case that the American people would have supported such a war after 4 years of pro-Soviet propaganda. Since ours is a democratic society, a war cannot be fought without the people’s support.
Not to mention all those pesky Constitutional issues.
FDR wasn’t naive when it came to Russia, he was simply in love with communism. One of the reasons he failed to warn the military about Pearl Harbor was because he wanted an excuse to get into the war so he could help his buddy Stalin. FDR was one of the biggest traitors this country has ever had, ranking right in there with the jerk we now have in office.
*** They discovered the mass graves, and immediately converted the atrocity into a propaganda coup to split the Big Three Allies.***
I saw a write up of this, with photos, in a reproduction of the German magazine SIGNAL.
“Uncle Joe” was FDR’s term of endearment for Joseph Stalin.
Was FDR unaware of the Holodmor?, a man-made famine in the Ukrainian SSR, part of the Soviet famine of 19321933? Or did he deliberately turn a blind eye to it ?
Maybe he believed the reports from NY Times’ Walter Duranty, who repeatedly denied that there was a famine going on in Ukraine ( this SOB won a Pulitzer which was NEVER REVOKED ).
RE: One of the reasons he failed to warn the military about Pearl Harbor
Today, we remember what happened in Pearl Harbor almost 70 years ago. FDR’s “knowledge” of the attack has seldom been discussed publicly.
First part is true; second part is false. FDR had good reason (as many say “calculated”) to believe that because of his policies toward the Empire of Japan that they would come to attack us. HOWEVER, it was always assumed that any such attack would occur in Asia or the extreme western Pacific; the attack on Pearl blindsided FDR as well.
IMO, FDR was looking for a Gulf of Tonkin kind of event, but ended up almost losing our entire Pacific Fleet!
Not to mention that the American left only supported ANY war against Hitler in order to SAVE Stalin and that be the priority over defeating the Japanese who actually attacked us.
A war against Stalin would have required the military annihilation of America’s Democrats first.
FDR had communist advisors in his administration.
Kinda like Barack Hussein and the Muslim Street?Only with the
guy in the White house I see evidence he intends to harm America-Never paid no attention to FDR-the damage he did we have adjusted to -as much as possible.
Actually we had broken the Japanese codes and FDR, and others, knew they were going to attack Pearl and knew the date and time. The magic intercepts that prove it are still classified "for security reasons". FDR ordered the carriers and new escort ships out of Pearl and left only the old obsolete ships in the harbor. He didn't think it would be that bad but still he knew. Also explain why McA left his planes on the ground when he had ample warning that the japs were coming and they would attack. He could have put the heavy bombers out of harms way but instead more than half the air fleet in the Phils was destroyed due to that bonehead move. Since McA was a military genius, there can only be one explanation: He was ordered to leave them on the ground.
The fact is too many of our military of the day were loyal to the CIC and not to the country.
All of this is MO but is backed up with facts if a person bothers to check on them.
Advisors, Heck he had a Communist VP Wallace. TG FDR didn’t die in 44.
“FDR had communist advisors in his administration.”
No sh1t. His Vice President (Wallace) was a Soviet agent!
That's a big Bravo Sierra, FRiend!
This is conspiracy kook stuff; the “evidence is classified” is a big hint. Duh, if it's classified, how does anyone outside of need-to-know circles know about it???
FDR has plenty of legitimate failures and faults to be critical of without parroting the “FDR knew about Pearl Harbor myth.”
