"A hand came through my facemask and, the next thing I knew, blood was running down my face," Roethlisberger said. "I said to [referee Terry McAulay], 'He hit me in the head.' He said, 'He was just trying to tackle you.' "
So much for protecting the quarterback, right?

If that hit happened to Brady or Manning they'd still be on the ground or still be yapping at the refs and we'd be awaiting a date for Ngata's execution.
He did suck it up, that was on the first possession and he didn’t miss a down. But they still should have called illegal hands to the face. Not to mention the uncalled helmet to helmet that took Miller out.
James kind of brought it on himself by being the most vocal complainer about the new rules. The squeaky wheel gets the grease, when you’re a hard hitter the thing to NOT do is complain about a new rule about hitting, it just draws the refs’ and league’s attention. Notice he played extra clean last night and didn’t get flagged for anything, and didn’t seem to do anything that will draw a fine. Keep the mouth shut and stay under the radar, that’s always the best way to go. Polamalu probably cleans just as many clocks as Harrison but he never complains about rules and keeps his image squeaky clean, he’ll have to actually kill somebody to get a flag. Ray Lewis’ only comment when the change came down was that the rules have changed many times in his career, no flags for him.
I really like Harrison, but when he started running his yap about the new rules I knew the rest of his season was going to be rough.
Looks like a helmet to helmet hit to me, although from that angle, it's hard to see whether his helmet is going into the QB's shoulder pad or into his facemask. Helmet to helmet hits are against the rules. They should be.
The league has been targeting certain illegal hits. Harrison appears to be a problem offender.
I didn't see the hit you mentioned so I can't comment.
The helmet it kind of sort of looks like he’s hitting is actually a players about five yards away. Bit of optical illusion there. The player he’s actually tackling has the helmet above his with about 6 inches of clearance, Harrison hit the QB right in the sternum but without a spearing action. Probably hurt like hell, and I don’t doubt the QB spent a couple seconds relearning how to breath after, but it’s a legal hit.
It looked to me like he was hitting the helmet/facemask of #14, but like I said, the angle is such that it’s hard to see whether the helmet was going into the shoulder pad or helmet of #14.
I suppose the moral of the story for Harrison is not to lead with his helmet.
The facemask ends just about the blurry bit that is the QBs arm. Can’t really not lead with the helmet, the way the human body is setup if you go horizontal your head will be going first. The most a player can do is try to angle so their helmet will provide a glancing blow.
It’s just a natural human reaction. When a player (in any sport) says “rule X sucks” what the refs hear is “I intend to break rule X” and then for the next few weeks they’re going to be paying extra close attention to him. It might not be fair but it’s how it goes. You see it in every sport, when a player complains about a new rule they get found in violation of that rule a bunch right after. Kind of like how little red sports cars get more speeding tickets.
Just because he was asked about it doesn’t mean he had to complain about it. Again look at Ray Lewis, asked nearly the same question his response was that rules changes happens and players need to adjust. Legitimate frustration or not if you draw attention to yourself people notice.
It is frustrating, but we should remember everybody out there is people, and people are fallible and have a whole bunch of odd inborn biases. And in spite of it all the Steelers are winning, got the rock solid spot to finish #1 in the division and no worse than #2 in the conference, and with a little bit of luck (Jets win tonight, and we beat them in 2 weeks) home field throughout can still be had.
I like James Harrison, and I think this’ll be his last year in the NFL. He’s one of those people who truly doesn’t give a rats dingleberries about what people think, and he’ll thumb his nose at the NFL. When Bush was president and the Stillers won the SB, Harrison didn’t go to the White House visit because he didn’t give a darn about going to the White House to get an award. Some thought it was his politics. And then when they won the SB again, and Zero was the alleged president, he still didn’t go... he just doesn’t give a darn about politics. And I know what he thinks of the NFL “rulers.”
Then there’s Hines Ward. The NFL will have it in for him for pointing out their hypocrisy over alcohol and gambling.... There’s some BIG money that’s going to be going after Ward and Harrison, and the rest of the Stillers team will pay as well, so as to penalize them for associating with rabble rousers.
Some choice quotes of Hines Ward on the NFL.
“Say one thing, and do another,” Ward said. “Talk about safety, but you add two games. Talk about you don’t want players to drink, but our major endorsement is Coors Light. That’s all you see is beer commercials.”
Ward said the league sends mixed messages to players.
“If they’re so concerned about safety, why are you adding two more games? That right there tells it all. They don’t care about the safety of the game,’’ Ward said.
“If they’re worried about concussions ... mandate each player has a new helmet. They don’t do that. They collect money from every helmet (company) that pays them enough money to get their helmets on the field. Now they have three different helmets, and none of them (are) proven that they work.”
“You say you don’t want us to gamble, but you have (point) spreads. For us, as players, we just play football. Whatever the league decides to do, they’re gonna do.”
“You don’t want us to gamble, but then there are [NFL-endorsed lottery scratch-off games].”
Hopefully Ward has a concealed carry permit.
