SEC title game arrives for Auburn, South Carolina
AJC ^ | 03 Dec 2010 | Ken Sugiura

This December, it's a different kind of drama.

The past two SEC championship games were 3 1/2-hour commercials for the league's dominance. Powerhouses Florida and Alabama squared off in de facto national championship semifinals. Both games starred past or eventual Heisman Trophy winners, neither with a whiff of controversy, and two coaches with reputations of success exceeded only by their capacity for grimness.

The 2010 version tastes a little different. South Carolina is coached by one of the conference's most despised (and successful) coaches. Auburn brings a perfect record, a shot at a national championship and a Heisman candidate, runaway favorite Cam Newton. Of course, there's this one little detail about Newton and alleged recruiting issues that you may have heard about.

"Each year seems to have a new level of excitement," former SEC commissioner Roy Kramer said. "Certainly this year is another one."

Interest has scarcely waned. On Thursday, tickets on the re-sale website stubhub.com were going for an average of $460. It's a drop from last year, but on par with 2008 prices. This season, CBS has drawn higher ratings in its coverage of the SEC than it did last year with its season-long homage to Florida quarterback Tim Tebow.

The culmination, held in the Georgia Dome for the 17th year, figures to provide a suitable conclusion to a regular season rife with strange turns. Which is to say that even if Auburn loses to drop to 12-1, it could still make the BCS championship game.

the pansy conference

I know Alabama, Florida, LSU and Tennessee in the pansy BCS won 6 out of 10 the last ten years but me thinks you may not know your football.

Just got back to the hotel in B’ham. What a fantastic game. The AU fans were terrific as usual and the SC fans were right there with them. SC has one of the best fan bases in the country. Y'all can be very proud of your team and fans. I did notice that they said the AU fans were the very best they had ever been around. So, WAR EAGLE and way to go Gamecocks. We enjoyed the game very much and we are looking forward to the next game.

I am reading this thread backwards, so I could be really stupid commenting at all here. But it always bothers me to read factually inaccurate things. Cam Newton’s dad shopped him to a former Mississippi STATE player, not Ole Miss. I have never ever ever heard Ole Miss mentioned in regards to sCam Newton. I did attend the University of Alabama and have my opinions of this mess, but my opinion doesn’t matter to anything. Please learn the facts and argue based on facts. And please don’t malign other schools not involved in this fiasco. If Cecil Newton shopped his son to Auburn as well, I expect that will be revealed eventually. Cam Newton is an amazing athlete. I hope he has better character than his dad. (I admit ignorance about whatever happened at U. of Florida. I’ve heard something about a laptop but don’t know the facts. I’ve heard something about cheating, but I don’t know the facts. There must not be any there there if the press hasn’t gone haywire over it. BUT the press could go fishing now that the story will be a bigger deal.)

Congratulations to Auburn on winning the SEC Championship!

Why do you hate AU so much? I was at the game today and it was a terrific game. The AU fans were the best but the SC fans were also terrific. We talked to many on the way to the parking lots and you know what everyone told us? The AU fans were the nicest they had ever been around. They specifically mentioned Bama, TN, GA, among others as being the worst.

Ummm... that was all Mississippi again, like I said. We don’t have any proof whatsoever at this time that his dad tried to shake down other universities.

Let’s see how the pansy conference does this time.

It does seem that most of the national championships come from around the range of a pissant. The SEC IOWs

War Eagle! I was hoping you had an enjoyable trip. Wish I had been there. It looked like a happy party.

“Does may (make) you wonder how unknowingly buying a stolen laptop is somehow selling it and how smart they are making that up.”

And Florida “may (made) up the cheating story...and Auburn detractors made up Cecil (soon to have a prison ministry) Newton asking for money...and Missippi State just made up the “...the money is better at Auburn” quote....and Sham Newton REALLY didn’t know ANYTHING about stolen laptops (he is so smart he tought they ALL were THAT CHEAP),he didn’t know ANYTHING about his Daddy getting a better deal from Auburn...yeah, and Hillary Clinton REALLY didn’t know that those subpoenaed documents were in the White House living quarters for two years...

I want to come visit your beach property in Arizona that you bought...Appears that Auburn fans believe what they WHAT to believe versus what at best appears to be very ugy...Or perhaps winning is so important that they hold to the “You can’t prove it, so we don’t care” posture.

Commentators (I don’t like them as a rule) all over the nation are crying about what a terrible ruling this was by the NCAA..if this stands, family members will be asking for cash all over this country...hopefully, the FBI is STILL on the case.

I truly feel sorry for you.... must be sad to have such hatred toward a young man whom you have never even met and only know what you have read about in newspapers.

Ironically, here on FR we have learned how biased the news media are.. BUT when the same thing happens in sports - you "Cam haters" eat every word up with a spoon and think its the gospel truth... truly pathetic!!

We had a fantastic time. Riding the bus was the best thing we could have done. The SC fans were the best we had been around. SC will be back and you can count on that. Have reservations for a charter flight to AZ. We are making our own memories! He is still having a hard time dealing with his mom's death. Say some prayers for him, please. Rode the bus with a man whose ex-wife is related to the AU player who ran back those bama punts for tds years ago. Forgot his name but R still keeps in touch with him.

Many here remind me of am OJ Simpson juror in the murder trial. The mental contortions that one goes through to rationalize their obvious mistake is beyond explanation.
One thing for sure . Thousands of Dad and Moms and girlfriends are now in business!! I hope they pay their taxes.

“I truly feel sorry for you.... must be sad to have such hatred toward a young man whom you have never even met”

What a silly, childish comment. I feel sorry for YOU. You are an Auburn KOOL-AIDE drinker...you act JUST like the liberal left...if someone offers ANYTHING that runs counter to your beliefs, you tag them as “hating”. I HATE no one... only a fool would see ALL of this and actaully hold desperately to the belief that he is ABSOLUTELY totally innocent....

I do not offer, have no proof, that Cam himself asked for money...but one would have to be a blind idiot to think he REALLY knew nothing about all of this.

You are believing what you want to believe..you are HOPING it isn’t true..and attacking, as democrats do, anyone who even suggests that your poor little Cam might be just a little dirty.

You act JUST LIKE the LIBERALS...call people Cam-haters, etc...now that is truly pathetic.

David Langner ran back those blocked punts! (showing my age here...)

Can you believe they are now comparing Cam to the murderer O.J. When I think I've seen the worst example of poor sportsmanship, I read comments here and realize the depths have not begun to be plumbed!

P.S. Bill Newton blocked those 2 punts....wonder where they are today?

David Langner ran those punts back in 1972. And I was there!

Of course, I’m praying for R during this time and also for you, as you try to understand and comfort him. Good job on that charter flight. Wish I were going. You have a good time now.

I just got back from church. And actually, it was a nice break from football. The service was a series of Lessons and Carols with the culminating Scripture of John 1:1 - 18. “No one has seen God at any time. The only begotten Son of God, who is in the bosom of the Father, He has explained him.” Wonderful!

Bill Newton, if I can trust what I read, is in Fayette, AL. I don’t know his profession. His wife, Sarah, is a former AU cheerleader and is currently serving on the AU Board of Trustees.

Well.... good then. I am so relieved to hear that you don't "Hate" anyone.

I guess I will overlook the comment you made that was not factual - Cam did *not* try to sell a stolen laptop - he bought a stolen lap top. (for $120) -

I will also overlook the tone of your response to me... you do realize (don't you?) that typing in all caps is the same as YELLING? If not - I suggest you re-read your post to me and every time you see a word in all caps - YELL! That is typical liberal behavior....if you don't have the truth on your side - just YELL at the other side. I also do not appreciate being called a blind idiot - sheesh! This is a football rivalry ... can't you use a little civility when speaking to a middle aged, conservative mother on this web-site?

As someone said in another thread - no one knows 100% what happened in this scenario - the difference is I hope he didn't do anything wrong and you hope he did. Perhaps that is not "hate" in your book - but I still stand by my statement that it is sad and pathetic !

Ha! We are both revealing our ages today - at the same time! I've thought and pondered whether that Iron Bowl or this years was the most thrilling..... I don't know - they each were wonderful in their own way and the memories are sweet!

That is neat that the Newtons are still involved with the University. Did you see Pat Dye on the sideline yesterday? Also Bo was there (of course) and probably many others that the camera didn't show. It's a life long attachment - that's why I get so upset reading these threads - probably should just ignore them, I know!

To 98 - I see that the drunken dwarf of Washington state possesses equal knowledge of politics and football. AU will dominate Oregon and slap them around like lil’ pissants.
