I don’t know what meds Mr Cox is taking but it’s powerful stuff. Watching the box set of the BBC Life documentaries on HD and Blu-ray is fantastic and waaaaaay better than standard DVD...especially when I’m lightly toasted.

Blu-ray blows DVD out of the water. Yes, some blu-ray transfers are much better than others, but even an average blu-ray transfer is far better than DVD.

Go here for blu-ray transfer rankings:

The improvement in PQ from DVD to bluray, although clearly noticeable, isn't as large as was the improvement from VHS to DVD....or laserdisc to DVD for that matter.

One is a small sample, but do you see a difference in the blu-ray you’ve got vs. your other DVD’s?

..and I won’t buy any more until the prices come way down.

I don't know how things are in your neck of the woods but around here there's a chain of video/CD stores that feature a surprising good selection of used blurays..usually for less than half what the disc sells for when new. That's how I obtained a good portion of my bluray collection.

I can’t tell any difference between a good HD disc and any Blu-Ray disc I’ve ever rented.

I've got a 60" plasma Pioneer Kuro with a blue ray dvd player and I can't tell the difference between a quality DVD and the BR disk..........

It's all hype in my opinion........

I have a new Sony Bravia 1920X1080 47”, with a new Sony Blu Ray. I can play regular (non HD or Blu Ray) old DVDs and they look Hi Def on this tv, (NL’s Christmas Vaca). Apparently it ‘upconverts’ or something like that. I should also mention that we had a Blu Ray DVD of the original Star Trek tv show and it looked like old tv.

That's just what it does,"upconverts".I,too, have a good quality HDTV and player and the well mastered DVDs look noticeably better than they do otherwise.

If you notice *no* difference between a well mastered bluray disc and its DVD "brother" then your TV and/or player is improperly adjusted. There *is* a difference...not a *huge* difference,IMO,but there is one.

Did you hook the player up with component cords or a high quality hdmi? THAT would make a big difference. I have a 60 inch plasma as well and whoa baby with the carbon hdmi cord connecting the blue ray. MMMM Good. Otherwise you will NOT get the 1081i.

My guess is either the poster doesn’t have the HDMI hook up (a high quality one or his setting are not set up for 1081i viewing. My 60 inch Pioneer Plasma rocks my new blue rays! ;-).

What sort of cord did you hook your Blu-Ray to your computer with and what are the display settings.

Well ... having been on the design team for the blu-ray chips in the Samsung players and having seen literally dozens of comparisons over many different TV models ... I can say with some experience that this person doesn’t know what they are talking about

You can rent Blu-ray for $1.50 at all the red box rental machines. I would do that first and if you desire it forever, then buy it new or used later from Red box IMO.

I used an HDMI cord but I never could figure out the settings. I finally just put the player on auto select. The monitor does have very high resolution tho I don’t remember what it is off hand.

Interestingly, I checked the list linked to on an earlier post on this thread. Smallville season 6 was one of the lowest ranked for Bu-ray quality. For some reason they did not have season 7.

I was going to get a few Blu-rays but was shocked at the prices. If they come down will get more. Also will eventually get an HD TV.

This is crap. DVDs have gotten worse as they’ve gotten cheaper, and the DVD players are mostly junk. Problem DVDs in the collection (what passes for a DVD collection here at home) play great on the BluRay player. I’ve just upgraded a bit, got one of those short-takeoff kinds, same brand as before (Panasonic).

I agree. There is a huge difference.

Here in Thailand, almost everything is bootlegged, or manufactured illegally in China including flash cards, blackberry phones and of course dvd’s and now blu ray discs.

Even the bootlegged, copied discs are impressively improved.

Kinda embarrasing for anyone to claim the difference is barely noticeable.
