Advice on firearm purchase needed
Vanity | pepsi_junkie

Posted on 11/23/2010 4:41:59 PM PST by pepsi_junkie

I've never posted a vanity before so I'm ready for the scolding I'll get for doing it, but I need help. My wife and I are considering buying a handgun and while I've fired a variety of guns previously at a range with friends, I've never bought or owned one. I know FR is full of 2nd amendment advocates and was hoping I could get some help as to what to buy.

It would be for both my wife and I for occasional use at a range and, in the unlikely event of a home invasion, self defense.

I don't want something too powerful for my wife to easily handle but at the same time I don't want something that would be ineffective in a self defense situation. Any suggestions?

My buddy's got one, and we went out with it. Its ok, but not my cop o tea. GREAT gun for his wife, who's kind of a timid one.

I have a Browning BAR 30-06 with a Leopold 3x9 50mm which works pretty well. Its fun to shoot but expensive cause its so much fun.

Free Republic IS NOT A SECOND AMENDMENT WEBSITE. It’s a conservative website. If you want to know about handguns, go to a regular firearms website like IDPA.com or ar15.com

I have one 41 mag, a ruger Super Blackhawk with 7 1/2” bbl. I have been on the lookout for a S&&W model 57 or 58 with 4” bbl. I will have to look at the trackers too. Also looking at the little Glock 29 in 10mm. I already have a 1911 10mm which is a Fusion Firearms custom 6” Longslide built by Bob Serva who used to own Dan Wesson Firearms and introduced the Semi-Autos to their lineup. The fit/finish and accuracy are really great for all the Fusion Firearms I have seen.

What I hate is when my buddy’s wife, all 5’-2” 110#, mother of 7, puts down the baby, and grabs the ‘Bull and clears the roller with a smile on her face.

Well, there is one opinion. Here is another.

My vote goes to the .45 acp with hollow points. Get a good one. My wife is tiny and can handle it well. Great one shot stop capability.

.38s and 9mm are easier to handle but have less of a chance of putting an intruder down fast.

.357 and .44s are too powerful for home defense unless you want to shoot your neighbor at the same time.

You discuss calibers, not hand guns. .45 and 9mm are mostly semi-auto. More complicated to operate for new shooters. .357 and .44 mags are mostly revolvers. Much better for less experienced shooters.

.38 and .44 specials in medium sized magnum revolvers are excellent self defense rounds and the larger gun softens recoil. The .357 or .44 mag loads are still an option adding versatility if a person has only one handgun.

My vote: 4" or 6" .357 revolver for overall load selection.

Everyone has an opinion. Some are classy about disagreeing and some aren’t.

Snort. That was funny.

Thanks for the advice. I was looking into this issue as well.

Stupid question, if I may. I went to the range a few times but they always make you wear sound protection. How loud would a 12 guage be if discharged inside?

Yep. That’s how I ended up with one of these:

It has less recoil...less recoil than an Abrams tank.

Agreed!!

I tried it with peep through scope mounts so I could use the iron sights. Was hog hunting in florida and the brush can be thick.

Recoil and flex in the mounts ended up shaking the scope loose. Not pretty and I discovered it at 5am in the thick brush surrounded by brambles and snakes.

It's not that bad. The Hogue grip does a decent job of mitigating the punishment. Still, you won't go out and put 100 rounds downrange in a single session. The recoil will get you, as well as the expense.
