Intimate Pat-Downs Raise Risk of Infection at Airports (not just pat-downs)
Live Science ^ | November 23, 2010 | Amanda Chan

When Hillary Bessiere flew to Cancun from Phoenix last week, she saw something that grossed her out, and validated her stringent travel hygiene habits: A woman changing a baby's diaper on an airplane, with nothing between his naked little bottom and the seat.

"I'm a mother, too, and I would never, ever do that," said Bessiere, director of business development at an event-planning firm in San Francisco.

This sort of incident is what spurs Bessiere, who travels about two weeks a month for work, to wipe down seats with disinfectant, use hand sanitizer religiously and wash her hands regularly. Health experts say her habits aren't in vain - especially if the bacteria from a baby's diaper ended up on the glove of a Transportation Security Administration officer during a security check.

Airports and airplanes were never clean places to begin with - after all, they're where large crowds from across the world converge in confined spaces.

But as screening procedures get stricter and more passengers opt for pat-downs instead of graphic X-rays, the likelihood of bacteria being spread increases, said Patrick Schlievert, a microbiology and immunology professor at the University of Minnesota Medical School.

The more aggressive the searches, and the more intimate contact there is, the higher the likelihood of transmitting infection, Schlievert said.

This season I’m going to stuff a duck in my pants so the TSA can pat down.

I haven’t touched a bathroom door handle in years. Then again my keyboard here at work is probably a germ factory. Reminds me to get a can of Lysol and bring it to work.

Which brings up the age-old question: If a donkey is an A$$, and a sheep can be a Ram, why is a Ram in the A$$ a goose?

Baffling. . .

Then run away and send 'em on a wild goose chase, and stick 'em with the bill.

I wonder what happens to the people behind the person with crabs?

Now the excuse will be - “I caught it from the TSA employee.”

Maybe everyone should just openly cough a lot in their direction, then mention it's just a little drug-resistant Tuberculosis brought on by full blown aids.

"By all means, Mr. TSA agent sir, you can frisk me, you don't even have to wear gloves![haaaacccck, haaaaccccck!]

...why is a Ram in the A$$ a goose?

A nip is a goose. A ram is a bathhouse.

Work in a hospital and I see all types of bugs, bacteria and viruses that can be spread by touch alone.. MRSA, C-diffe and other bugs. So the TSA get to wear gloves but the rest of the passengers are given what disease Joe Blow had before them.. Nice job TSA.

Did you ever go to a hospital and be told to put on that gown with the whole back out of it?

Then they bring you a wheel chair and tell you to sit in it?

How often do you think the bottoms of those wheel chairs are scrubbed.

Never??? That’s probably right , unless someone had an accident that was so visible they couldn help but clean it up.

How does she get the sanitizer onto the plane?

The last time I flew, which will be the last time I fly, I was thinking about how filthy those plastic pails (sp?) are that everyone puts theirs shoes in. Millions of people walking around on the filthy city streets then putting their shoes in the pail. Then I come along behind them and put my wallet and other stuff in the pail. Then someone comes along behind me and does the same thing. And we’re not allowed to bring sanitizer. Talk about creating a pandemic!

One of the first things your taught in nursing school is how to wash your hands...All handles in the bathrooms are germ factory’s...even handles on faucets at the sink. You use a paper towel to turn off the faucet after washing hands. The water in the toilet is more germ free than anything else in the public restroom, it gets flushed after every use...I also don’t flush with my hand, use your foot to press the handle.(this will raise some remarks, but I wouldn’t touch the flush handle at any time....)

We NEVER changed our baby’s diaper without a blanket or something down between the baby and any surface. First and foremost we didn’t want the baby’s bottom coming into contact with who knows what and secondly...we would NEVER change a baby on someone else’s furniture without something placed between the baby and said furniture. It just comes down to plain common sense to protect the baby and then common sense and RESPECT for someone else’s property.
Raising kids is just common sense period. Unfortunately....

People who do that make me wonder what their homes look like. If you don’t behave like that in your own home you certainly don’t behave like that away from home.
