‘Gray Lady Down’ (What the Decline and Fall of the New York Times means for America)
The Daily Caller ^ | 11/22/10 | Jamie Weinstein

2. What has the fall of the New York Times meant for America, if anything?

The Times is the Harvard of news. It is at the top of the journalistic food chain and what it says is news sets the agenda for much of the rest of the press. That might be changing somewhat, but it’s still important. The problem is that the Times has seen a lessening in its commitment to agnostic, professionally detached and neutral reporting in favor of advancing its political values in a way very correctly characterized, in many cases, as “cheerleading.” Yet this kind of p.c. boosterism doesn’t always work, as the many unintended consequences of the Times reporting and commentary have shown. In fact, it often generates a backlash. Most recently, the paper’s antagonism and mischaracterizations of the Tea Party movement contributed to the midterm “shellacking” of the Democratic Party. If it can be said, as I did in a piece for Real Clear Politics, that the Obama administration outsourced health-care reform to an out-of-touch Congress, it could also be said that it outsourced its broader public relations effort to the Times, as well as MSNBC and Comedy Central — the Don Drapers of the Democratic Party, if you will.

1. Why did you decide to write the book?

Journalism is one of America’s more important democratic institutions. For better or worse, the Times is still central to our policy debates, our national conversation and whatever common culture we have left. It once represented the gold standard of American journalism. So I was curious what had happened, how bad the tarnish was and what policies and personalities were most responsible.

Maybe the rest of the news medial will have to start creating their own propaganda instead of being a NYT echo chamber.

This piece is wrong. The NYT still is published and it still exerts influence in liberal circles. It has been “in decline” now for decades and yet it is still in business.

4. What are the greatest problems you see with the New York Times’ coverage of issues today? And is there a particular area where they are especially bad?

The Times has been particularly bad on race, immigration, the growth of Islam in America, gay rights (especially gay marriage), the War on Terror and the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. The common thread is a mentality defined by a kind of “punitive liberalism” which holds that America at its core is somehow morally tainted and needs to atone — to “reclaim its soul” as one of its op-ed columnists put it.

A sad picture of a standard of knowledgeable, succinct, and in-depth writing that became hopelessly mired in secular humanism and it's accompanying dreadful socialist death-culture philosophy.

Scripture says, Trust in the LORD with all your heart; and lean not unto your own understanding. Proverbs 3:5.

"Intellectualism" seems susceptible to the feeling at some point that one knows so much that he no longer needs to trust in the Lord with all his heart because he can safely lean on his own understanding which he believes now to be so vast.

Doesn't appear to be only a recent experience. Jesus constantly grouped the scribes with the Pharisees in his condemnation of what they did. Apparently 2000+ years ago journalists and "intellectuals" also tended to get carried away with themselves.

It means that all of the so-called journalists from the newpapers that go under are reduced to writing for left wing blogs.

It's hard to believe that just 35 years ago the New York Times was considered the gold standard for newspaper reporting for the entire nation. Today's version is little more than the nation's 'Daily Collegian', complete with daily childish screeds against conservatism, capitalism, and the traditional American family. It truly is strictly a propaganda publication of the Democrat Party USA.

These Ubama campaign offices could just as easily have been the newspapers' offices in the New York Times Building:

Ah, you have posted the titanium nugget in the article.

If having a national conversation about the NYT would expose the soiled petticoat beneath the old gray lady’s skirt, this book might be the thing to do it.

Not to hijack the thread, but doesn’t Romney look like a Cyborg? His hair looks like it’s glued on and his face looks like extruded plastic.

Now, now. The Times blurb on this person makes her seem quite creditable.

Maureen Dowd, winner of the 1999 Pulitzer Prize for distinguished commentary, became a columnist on The New York Times Op-Ed page in 1995 after having served as a correspondent in the paper's Washington bureau since 1986. She has covered four presidential campaigns and served as White House correspondent. She also wrote a column, "On Washington," for The New York Times Magazine.

Ms. Dowd joined The New York Times as a metropolitan reporter in 1983. She began her career in 1974 as an editorial assistant for The Washington Star, where she later became a sports columnist, metropolitan reporter and feature writer. When the Star closed in 1981, she went to Time magazine.

Born in Washington D.C., Ms. Dowd received a B.A. degree in English literature from Catholic University (Washington, D.C.) in 1973.
OTOH, it's good to see that a B. A in English lit is good for something.

The Times has been suffering from a cancer for a long time now.

It’s always been left-leaning, but it began dying when Pinch took over, and promoting a pro-gay/pro-Democrat agenda, and keeping Pinch popular in the New York Social scene though it, became more important than reporting facts.

The New York Times Editorial Board is called “The Gay Mafia”, FOR A REASON....

The "slimes" sought to become the obama "newsletter" and when you lie down with the dog, you'll get up with fleas.

The NYT has always confused its mission of news reporting with candidate promotion.

But the years of biased reporting have taken their toll; it's easy to sit around and blame your declining ratings and dwindling cash on the internet, cable TV, etc., but content plays a large part in the success of a news outlet.

For some reason, liberal journalists have a death wish; they constantly chip away at the very base that holds them up in favor if liberalism personified in people like obama, pelosi, et al. They attach themselves to the wagons of vagabond politicians, when even a cursory glance at the ratings expose them as losers.

The Gray Lady might be going down, but it's by suicide, not murder.

It's true - when it's obvious to everyone 'teacher's pets' have been chosen - the rest of the class rebels. In it's own weird hateful little way, the liberals of the New York Times have helped conservatives coalesce into a strong unified party... And the Newspapers who follow the New York Times lead ( it's not news until the Times says it's news) have helped us on a local level.

If the New York Times is going under, conservatives should start a donation drive to keep them limping along...
