2. What has the fall of the New York Times meant for America, if anything?
The Times is the Harvard of news. It is at the top of the journalistic food chain and what it says is news sets the agenda for much of the rest of the press. That might be changing somewhat, but its still important. The problem is that the Times has seen a lessening in its commitment to agnostic, professionally detached and neutral reporting in favor of advancing its political values in a way very correctly characterized, in many cases, as cheerleading. Yet this kind of p.c. boosterism doesnt always work, as the many unintended consequences of the Times reporting and commentary have shown. In fact, it often generates a backlash. Most recently, the papers antagonism and mischaracterizations of the Tea Party movement contributed to the midterm shellacking of the Democratic Party. If it can be said, as I did in a piece for Real Clear Politics, that the Obama administration outsourced health-care reform to an out-of-touch Congress, it could also be said that it outsourced its broader public relations effort to the Times, as well as MSNBC and Comedy Central the Don Drapers of the Democratic Party, if you will.

1. Why did you decide to write the book?
Journalism is one of Americas more important democratic institutions. For better or worse, the Times is still central to our policy debates, our national conversation and whatever common culture we have left. It once represented the gold standard of American journalism. So I was curious what had happened, how bad the tarnish was and what policies and personalities were most responsible.
Ding dong the witch is dead?
This piece is wrong. The NYT still is published and it still exerts influence in liberal circles. It has been “in decline” now for decades and yet it is still in business.
*** Ding dong the witch is dead? ***
Well, at least someone is giving “her” a full body pat down.
BWAHAHAHahahahahahahaha!!!!!!
As if ... "objective journalism" was always a fraud.
Right, Mr. Duranty?
The Times has been particularly bad on race, immigration, the growth of Islam in America, gay rights (especially gay marriage), the War on Terror and the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. The common thread is a mentality defined by a kind of punitive liberalism which holds that America at its core is somehow morally tainted and needs to atone to reclaim its soul as one of its op-ed columnists put it.
and whatever common culture we have left.
Scripture says, Trust in the LORD with all your heart; and lean not unto your own understanding. Proverbs 3:5.
"Intellectualism" seems susceptible to the feeling at some point that one knows so much that he no longer needs to trust in the Lord with all his heart because he can safely lean on his own understanding which he believes now to be so vast.
Doesn't appear to be only a recent experience. Jesus constantly grouped the scribes with the Pharisees in his condemnation of what they did. Apparently 2000+ years ago journalists and "intellectuals" also tended to get carried away with themselves.
It means that all of the so-called journalists from the newpapers that go under are reduced to writing for left wing blogs.
These Ubama campaign offices could just as easily have been the newspapers' offices in the New York Times Building:

Pinch poops out.

Ah, you have posted the titanium nugget in the article.
If having a national conversation about the NYT would expose the soiled petticoat beneath the old gray lady’s skirt, this book might be the thing to do it.
It is at the top of the journalistic food chain...How about Top'o'the'Barf Chain... in fact, where IS the Barf Alert?
Not to hijack the thread, but doesn’t Romney look like a Cyborg? His hair looks like it’s glued on and his face looks like extruded plastic.
Maureen Dowd, winner of the 1999 Pulitzer Prize for distinguished commentary, became a columnist on The New York Times Op-Ed page in 1995 after having served as a correspondent in the paper's Washington bureau since 1986. She has covered four presidential campaigns and served as White House correspondent. She also wrote a column, "On Washington," for The New York Times Magazine.OTOH, it's good to see that a B. A in English lit is good for something.
Ms. Dowd joined The New York Times as a metropolitan reporter in 1983. She began her career in 1974 as an editorial assistant for The Washington Star, where she later became a sports columnist, metropolitan reporter and feature writer. When the Star closed in 1981, she went to Time magazine.
Born in Washington D.C., Ms. Dowd received a B.A. degree in English literature from Catholic University (Washington, D.C.) in 1973.
The Times has been suffering from a cancer for a long time now.
It’s always been left-leaning, but it began dying when Pinch took over, and promoting a pro-gay/pro-Democrat agenda, and keeping Pinch popular in the New York Social scene though it, became more important than reporting facts.
The New York Times Editorial Board is called “The Gay Mafia”, FOR A REASON....
It's true - when it's obvious to everyone 'teacher's pets' have been chosen - the rest of the class rebels. In it's own weird hateful little way, the liberals of the New York Times have helped conservatives coalesce into a strong unified party... And the Newspapers who follow the New York Times lead ( it's not news until the Times says it's news) have helped us on a local level.
If the New York Times is going under, conservatives should start a donation drive to keep them limping along...
After reading the above comments, I decided to post this to “all”
