Authorities in Alabama are investigating the death of a 5-year-old boy who was attacked in his yard by a pack of up to a dozen dogs....
The child was home with a babysitter in Phenix City, Alabama, Monday afternoon when he darted outside into the fenced yard and was attacked, Taylor said.
Animal control investigators determined 12 dogs were involved, but it was not clear how many of them bit the boy.
One of the dogs involved belonged to the boy's family, Taylor said. The 11 others belonged to neighbors and apparently slipped under the fence, he said.
Taylor said the dogs were from mixed breeds, and none of them were pit bulls.

Don't get too excited - it was the semi-auto version. (probably better anyway - less muzzle climb that way :-)
I think that is the law here in GA too, but the dog owners made a big stink and the sheriff's dept did something to quite them down 20 voters vs 1 voter I guess.
In some cases it is necessary to have a loose dog or two. For instance I could not have my horses if I didn’t have my Great Dane loose. The coyotes and feral dogs would tear the horses to pieces if Daisy wasn’t on guard. She is gentle with my small dogs but will kill or chase off any canine that is not “hers”. My cats sure appreciate her! No more being coyote food. Plus when I fell in the mud in February and broke my ankle I won’t have made it if she hadn’t been there to help me get to the house.
I think that story may have been posted here on FR.
Once or twice...
...a minute.
My brother, living in a rural community, deals with all dogs on his property that don’t belong to him...with a .22 rifle. No questions asked.
Not that everyone is able to do this in every neighborhood, but it works for him.
I wouldn’t hold it against a babysitter for letting a five year old go into a fenced in yard.
I miss Chet99.
Who has 11 dogs? One dog alone is generally harmless, but they’re pack animals and when they bunch up, they revert to wolves.
I know when I was 5, I got into all sorts of trouble. I think it would have been different if the babysitter was there to supervise, but anything can happen, even in a fenced yard. Someone could have come into the yard and kidnapped the child, he could have been bitten by a snake, or even left the yard (I have heard of two year olds doing this!).
I used to babysit kids when I was younger, getting paid very little. However, I still took the job seriously. You never know what a child is capable of doing until he surprises you (most of the time it’s an unpleasant surprise, in my experience). A babysitter should be able to manage watching a child that is outside, fence or not, imo.
That doesn’t negate the fact that eleven dogs were out running the streets, and that the owners should know better. That many dogs in a pack can take down a grown man very easily.
My FIL, now departed, ran sheep in Utah. Loose dogs were a problem. Usual rule - see a dog on the property, shoot the dog. So sorry the dog had crappy owners, etc.
Anyway, a dog got into the sheep pen and killed several outright, ran several more into a full irrigation ditch where they drowned.
He shot the dog, called the Sheriff. Sheriff asked what he would do - Dad just asked him to file a report and stay mum for a bit.
He knew who owned the dog and went to the owner’s house and asked about the dog. The owner said he dog was ‘out’. Dad went to the truck, got the dog and dumped the dead dog on the mans porch.
The guy went ballistic - Dad went and sat back at his truck. Owner called the Sheriff - who came to the house. The dog owner demanded an arrest. Didn’t happen.
The dog owner took Dad to court, wanted some big money for the loss of the dog. Dad didn’t say anything, just let the guy rant. Finally, the dog owner ran out of steam Then the judge asked if Dad had any comment. Dad asked the dog owner if he was sure that the dead dog was indeed, his. Guy went ballistic again. Yes, without a doubt, it was.
Then Dad called the Sheriff up and asked for the report on his sheep.
The dog owner got hit with a judgment for over 30K, no cost to Dad for lawyers.
And, yes, the dog owner did pay - all of it. That is another story in itself.
Gotta love it when belligerent morons dig themselves a hole and then jump in.
Chet99 Not on the list anymore - anyone know why?
And he ws no fool- he not only led the idiot by the nose, he let him hang himself.
We still shoot dogs out at the farm, but not so much since a Caucasian Mountain Dog (Ovcharka), we call him Buddy, adopted the farm.
Now that I think about it we don't see many cats, ‘yotes or even too many bunnies......

Guy in my old neighborhood did that when getting arrested. Cops messed him up but good!!!!!!!!
I wouldn’t hesitate to do the same if I had livestock. I agree, dogs in packs are bad news, and I have the scars to prove it (I still can’t put pressure on my thumb after it was bitten through several months ago, and I have a puncture wound on my upper arm that is still very sore!).
