My FIL, now departed, ran sheep in Utah. Loose dogs were a problem. Usual rule - see a dog on the property, shoot the dog. So sorry the dog had crappy owners, etc.
Anyway, a dog got into the sheep pen and killed several outright, ran several more into a full irrigation ditch where they drowned.
He shot the dog, called the Sheriff. Sheriff asked what he would do - Dad just asked him to file a report and stay mum for a bit.
He knew who owned the dog and went to the owner’s house and asked about the dog. The owner said he dog was ‘out’. Dad went to the truck, got the dog and dumped the dead dog on the mans porch.
The guy went ballistic - Dad went and sat back at his truck. Owner called the Sheriff - who came to the house. The dog owner demanded an arrest. Didn’t happen.
The dog owner took Dad to court, wanted some big money for the loss of the dog. Dad didn’t say anything, just let the guy rant. Finally, the dog owner ran out of steam Then the judge asked if Dad had any comment. Dad asked the dog owner if he was sure that the dead dog was indeed, his. Guy went ballistic again. Yes, without a doubt, it was.
Then Dad called the Sheriff up and asked for the report on his sheep.
The dog owner got hit with a judgment for over 30K, no cost to Dad for lawyers.
And, yes, the dog owner did pay - all of it. That is another story in itself.
Gotta love it when belligerent morons dig themselves a hole and then jump in.
