This is unbelievable and programming suicide for 1210 AM.
I cant stand smerconish. He comes across as such a panzie.
>>in a shakeup aimed at keepin it local.
this has happened in other markets. In Prov. RI Rush went from WPRO to WHJJ and I don’t know for sure if WPRO’s
owner Citadel wanted to go all local, or WHJJ’s owner—
Clear Channel, whose syndication arm does Rush— pulled it
from WPRO.
In many cities like Boston local talk does very well and
some national shows wind up on secondary signals. Clear
Channel’s WXKS 1200 now has Rush, Beck, Hannity, etc
along with local talker Jeff Katz (orig from Phila.)
but even with a better signal have had tough time with
ratings. But even low ratings can still bring in money
if they can sell some ads in a desirable “demo”
WPHT has a good signal after dark on most of the Eastern Seaboard. Phillies games (like the ‘08 and ‘09 World
Series), etc
That's what I do at work to listen to Rush. Not sure if the station I use does Beck too? It is WIBC in Indianapolis. What station are you listening to?
As I said...
>>One option could be the other, lower-rated conservative talk station, WNPT (990-AM). In addition, an existing Philadelphia station could change formats to go after Beck and Hannity and create a instant challenger to WPHT.
Hannity and Beck are syndicated by Premier Radio Networks, a subsidiary of national radio giant Clear Channel Communications, which owns several music stations in Philadelphia.
Thanks as always, raccoonradio... very interesting!
I hope Clear Channel creates another super "Rush Radio" station in Philly, and that they crush WPHT and Smerconish.
Yikes... sorry to hear that. I had high hopes for Rush Radio 1200 in Boston... hope they make it.
I recognize WPHT as a station we listened to while traveling through Pennsylvania (listening to the Phillies or whatever), but I've never tried to get the station up here in northern CT. Where I live, once the sun goes down it seems that all stations on my radio - including local WTIC 1080 AM - start fading fast.
Hannity and Beck could end up at 990, but Medved is pretty decent during the 3 - 6 slot, so if they wanted Hannity there they’d have to move Medved to a delayed pre-recorded broadcast slot. In any event, 770 comes in pretty clear around here and the afternoon broadcast leads right into Levin, so to hell with 1210.
One thing is for sure - - Smerconish is a useless, cowardly nincompoop who will never get a single second of my listening time. That’s a non-starter. Giordano is good, though, and giving him Beck’s slot might work out okay. Personally, I prefer the Beck TV show to his radio show, and that’s enough Beck for me.
The people at 610 have got to be popping champagne corks.
WPHT is a clear channel (not to be confused with company of same name) station, one that powers in well on Eastern
Seaboard at night when atmospheric conditions change. Some stations must power down or change directions of their signals to accomodate stations like that. Of course over the years these stations reached wide areas at night (like
Nashville’s WSM AM 650 which spread across much of the country with country music at night). Sometimes especially this time of year you may find the likes of WPHT 1210
coming in just after sunrise or just before sunset, too.
I have picked them up just north of Boston even in late
afternoon.
As for Rush Radio even if they don’t burn up the ratings they may “sell well” and Clear Channel wants the shows—and the ads—to run.
Recent Boston ratings for people 6 and over (note:
the talk radio “demo” is actually 25-54 or 35-54 or
something so this may be misleading)
http://www.radio-info.com/markets/boston
For talk stations:
WBZ (talk at night) 7.3 (most of that is for their news)
WRKO 3.1
WTKK 2.6
WXKS Rush Radio 0.7 (not to be confused with their
music sister station on FM which does great)
WWZN liberal talk (DOES NOT SHOW UP)
WXKS 1200 has improved their signal recently...again
these numbers are “six and over” and I don’t know how
well they do with the older adults who like talk radio.
If anything WXKS (AM) may be a “loss leader” for Clear
Channel here. They make their money with music stations
(Jamn 94.5, Kiss 108) and that helps to finance
conservative talk on 1200 and Spanish music on 1430.
I don’t know if they would have tried it but if 94.5
or 107.9 (Kiss 108) had really lousy ratings they could
have tried to do Rush Radio on FM. but the ratings are
fine so they didn’t
I have actually been able to listen to nighttime Phillies games on 1210 from Camp Lejeune, NC.
Maybe there is something more intersting going on at 1210.
Doesn’t this crazy move remind you of the final days of 96.5 WWDB-FM when they suddenly axed Phil Valentine and Tom Marr in favor of some squishy nobodies who didn’t seem to like politics?
Yeah, that same weird feeling hit me like Déjà vu.
The demographics (from Arbitron?) seem ridiculous... "6 and over"?? I would bet the demographic for talk radio is somewhere around 30-85+, but what do I know...
If I think of it later today, I'll tune into 1210 and see if I can hear WPHT, just for the heck of it.
I use the "WunderRadio" app. It allows me to browse stations first by "Talk", then by "Conservative". From that list I can choose Rush by immediate or tape delay which comes in handy if I'm stuck in morning meetings (west coast). So I end up using KRMG in Tulsa OK which is a 1 hour delay.
Standard AM radio is becoming obsolete.

What time is Beck on?
Glenn Beck comes on in Philly @ 9am on WHP 580 followed by Rush but not Hannity....he comes on at 6pm.
