I'll tell you why I don't like Facebook. I keep getting these invitations from people I know asking me to "join them on Facebook". I prefer to stay anonymous on the Internet so I ignore them. But one time, I scrolled down the invitation from someone that I barely know (that I don't even care much for) - AND - at the bottom of the page, it said "here are some other people you might know on Facebook".

There were thumbnail pics of my niece, my next door neighbor and a few other people that I know. There were also several people that I had no idea who they were.

I'm thinking, "How the hell does Facebook know my connections to these people? I had never received invitations to join Facebook by most of these people. How did it know that I KNEW them? Then I realized, that the people I didn't know, whose photos were shown in those thumbnail pics WERE PEOPLE THAT WERE ON MY EMAIL ADDRESS LIST - PEOPLE I HAD SOLD THINGS TO ON EBAY.

Then I realized that all of these people listed - I had had email contact with before. HOW THE HELL DOES FACEBOOK GET ACCESS TO MY EMAIL ADDRESS LIST??????

Could someone explain that to me?

SeewhutImean??

There is a thing on FB called Friend Finder and if you use it, one of the options is to find friends USING YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS AND LOGIN PASSWORD!!!!! (Password to your email account)

People who you have corresponded with via email used the FB Friend Finder by giving FB access to their email inbox and outbox. So FB knows where your email address had popped up.

It’s actually pretty simple, all those invitations came because people you know typed your e-mail address into facebook. And all those people that appeared at the bottom were facebook-friends with the person who sent you that invitation and it possibly pulled a few from others that had sent you an invitation. FB did not access your e-mail list, it “accessed” the friends list of people who had invited you.
