I just noticed this.
Why is the Facebook "Like" icon now appearing on every page I go to? Is FR now connected in some way to Facebook?

Exactly what I was thinking...
Not happy about that.
I’ve seen Like button used to designate sites, but every flippin’ thread?
Ygh!

I’m hoping that we’re still allowed to ask “why”.
It looks like you are. So, how about those Eagles?

Does that mean that everything posted on FR is now somehow linked to the FB page? Nope. You have to join the same as you do with the FR Yahoo Group.

Come on guys, its part of the template used to generate posts.
Its not big brother staring down your throat.
If you don’t want to have anything to do with Facebook, don’t click it.
I love the conspiracies just like everyone else, but everything is not a conspiracy.
Its a contrail.

Fear not. You are safe from Facebook. They are not linked to each other.

Note that if you don't have a Facebook account, this icon does nothing. If you do have a Facebook account, this allows you to easily join the FreeRepublic Facebook page if you wish.
I normally run Firefox with the "NoScript" add-on, which prevents any web content from executing unless I give it permission to do so, and I don't get the Facebook button at all. If you're concerned about online privacy, you should definitely be running NoScript, or something like it.

“online privacy”
Oxymoron.

A missile is fired off the coast of California and a Like button shows up on FR.
Coincidence? I think NOT!

I just 'liked' a FR story and all it did was put a link to the Free Republic page that story was on.
"xxxx likes Bristol Palin's dancing on TV set off man in standoff, complaint says on freerepublic.com. · Like Unlike · Comment"
So it could possibly be used to get your Facebook friends addicted to FR.
To: COUNTrecount
She probably had a public page too and accepted as "Friends" everyone that asked.
If you don't have FB and you didn't join FR on FB the icon doesn't affect you. FR is also on Yahoo as a group. You don't show up there (unless you joined) either.
