Need some FReeper help!
Self ^ | 11/09/2010 | PhilStone

Posted on 11/09/2010 8:37:59 PM PST by PhilosopherStone1000

I have just finished a 65,000 word manuscript and am looking for a conservative book agent. Unfortunately, most literary (non-fiction) agents tend to be lefties.

Just wondering if any FReepers have had experience with book publishing and can suggest any literary agents who enjoy working with conservative authors.

I'm afraid that I can't say more about my manuscript simply because I have been somewhat more outspoken here on FR than might be good for future book sales.

I'm not asking for a personal recommendation, simply the names of anyone that you might have worked with to publish a book that isn't a complete lefty loon. Feel free to FReepmail me if you prefer to remain anonymous.

Thanks for the help!

Phil

Regenery was or is a big publisher of conservative books. Look around to see who is publishing conservative books.

Regnery is one of the best publishers of conservative non-fiction.

World Net Daily (WND) always publishes conservative books.

Check out Salem Communications. They own Christian stations all over the country and they have a publishing arm especially for conservatives who want to get their work in print. I have heard great things about them.

Check out http://bayword.com, that’s their homepage here in the Tampa area. I think there’s an ad for the publishing part of them there. If not, just google Salem Communications. I think their publishing operation is Zulon Press.

Hope this helps!

Have you written up a book proposal yet? That would be something to work on since agents don’t have time to read entire manuscripts. Publishers typically want to see three chapters or so, an outline of remaining chapters, and a marketing plan.

FWIW, over 50% of all sales last year were on-line as opposed to typical stick-brick stores. You might check out that marketing and sales

No they don't. They might consider a conservative book for publication. They don't necessarily publish all books submitted.

The book is actually finished. The problem is trying to find a non-leftie agent since most serious publishers will not consider submissions that are not agented.

Have you considered “self-publishing?” I have publishing experience with AuthorHouse (probably around $500 to get a standard paper back out there), but have subsequently really gotten involved with “CreateSpace,” a wholly-owned subsidiary of Amazon.com. It is so easy to publish your own works - you just have to be prepared to market aggressively (which they can also help you to do). I have published 3 books, and about to release my fourth. It costs about $35 to set up, plus each “proof” you utilize costs about $35, by the time you make changes and then approve. They have templates for you to use for cover design, etc. When you finalize, your royalties are huge, compared to what you can obtain from traditional publishing concerns. They distribute through all the traditional channels (Amazon.com, Barnes and Noble, etc.). If you have a website, and if you take advantage of book-signing promotions and marketing materials, etc., you should still be way ahead of the traditional routes. Besides, most of them won’t even look at your manuscript anyway - their policy is often not to even open your envelope. Contact me privately if you wish, and I will give you the benefit of all my trials and errors. Best of luck.

I’d love to be published by Regnery. But they don’t accept non-agented submissions. So I need to find an agent that has worked with them before.

McGee - Author looking for publisher ping.

PhiloStone - maybe a PM to Travis as a way to start. There are several other active, others who do it when they are sober, authors among the FR crowd. Good Luck.

There must be a number of conservative books you enjoy. A little research in the publishing industry will tell you who the authors’ agents are.

Also, if you’re seriously interested in getting published by a traditional ink publishing house, you should be doing extensive marketing research by reading PW, joining writers’ clubs that are for authors of the sort of book you’ve written, reading everything you hear about there, reading the competition, and networking in clubs and organizations about your field of interest. Go to conferences. Ask questions. Make sure your ms. corresponds to present market realities.

And finally, you have to develop and present a marketing plan in addition to the classical book proposal. Before anybody is going to publish your book, you have to show what you can bring to the sales effort. They aren’t going to do it for you. Can you speak in public convincingly? Do you have the credentials (advanced degree, military or political or business experience, specialized expertise) that will make readers believe what you’ve written? Do you have good interview skills? Are you gorgeous and well-dressed, at ease on TV? Do you know influential people who will write a blurb for you? Put your qualifications in your marketing plan.
