Obviously it was "detected" -- it was caught on camera! And if a news camera can see it, so can more sophisticated things.
You're apparently hoping for a worst-case scenario, such as Chinese provocation, so that's what you see.
But really ... the more plausible explanation is a US test using US assets, and they're just not going to tell you what it is. They're the ones with all the info, and they have no need to tell us what they actually know.
He always has to think the hell out of things because he is incapable of making an intelligent decision...

The Gotland class attack submarines of the Swedish Navy are modern diesel-electric submarines. They are the first submarines in the world to feature a Stirling engine air-independent propulsion (AIP) system, which extends their underwater endurance from a few days to weeks.[1] This capability had previously only been available with nuclear powered submarines.
As of 2008 the Gotland-class attack submarine is one of the most modern submarines of the Swedish Navy in service, mainly designed for submarine missions such as anti-shipping operations, ASW-missions, forward surveillance, special operations and mine-laying tasks.[1]
It is a non-nuclear vessel running on an Air Independent Propulsion (AIP) system with low signatures, extreme shock resistance and a powerful combat system. Together with other features this results in a submarine able to carry out the missions listed above.[1]
The auxiliary Stirling engine uses liquid oxygen and diesel fuel to drive 75 kilowatt generators for either propulsion or charging batteries. The AIP endurance of the boats is around 14 days at five knots (9 km/h).
Automation and computerized steering allow a single operator to steer the submarine in depth and course. Only a small crew is required, leading to good accommodation standards and low operating costs[1]
After being refit and upgraded to sustain the higher temperatures of tropical water,[2] HMS Halland took part in a multi-national exercise in the Mediterranean from September 16th 2000. Allegedly, there she remained undetected while still recording many of her friendly adversaries, attracting interest from the participating countries. In early November the same year, she participated in a NATO “blue-water” exercise in the Atlantic. There she reportedly won a victory in a mock “duel” with Spanish naval units, and then the same in similar duel against a French SSN, a nuclear-powered attack submarine. She also “defeated” an American SSN, the USS Houston.[2]

HMS Gotland transits through San Diego Harbor with the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76) following close behind during the “Sea and Air Parade” held as part of Fleet Week San Diego 2005.In 2004, the Swedish government received a request from the United States of America to lease HMS Gotland – Swedish-flagged, commanded and manned, for a duration of one year for use in anti-submarine warfare exercises. The Swedish government granted this request in October 2004, with both navies signing a memorandum of understanding on March 21, 2005.[3][4] The lease was extended for another 12 months in 2006.[5][6][7] In July 2007, HMS Gotland departed San Diego for Sweden.[8]
HMS Gotland managed to snap several pictures of the USS Ronald Reagan during a wargaming exercise in the Pacific Ocean, effectively “sinking” the aircraft carrier.[9] The exercise was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of the US Fleet against diesel-electric submarines, which some have noted as severely lacking.
Maybe I have watched too much tv lately, but surely, this had to have been picked up on radar. The experts should be able to do the math and determine just where the missle was launched from?
This missile was only harmless because it headed out to sea and not over the mainland.
Apparently they know that the risk of being contradicted and exposed as lying is very real.

I am not sure about this, but do know that lying gets one booted out of the academies, but not sure about ROTC.
Obfuscation might be tolerated in the name of not frightening the sheep, however.

If a sub, could have been an advanced Diesel electric boat. They are really quiet (moreso than a nuke, no cooling pumps).

NORAD knows everything, or anything they want to know.
Of course they know who launched it.
If it was ours they don’t want to talk about it for some reason.
If it was not ours it was pretty much an act of war so they either play dumb or retaliate.
The lack of anti submarine activity may mean it was ours or it may mean that we have already retaliated against the foreign submarine that launched it.
If so, the foreign submarine that launched may have already been destroyed which is also something we may not wish to talk about

It passed spell check and as I hit the Post button I saw it and knew I’d end up “red faced.”
The video of the missile from yesterday shows an exact opposite contrail. The large spread out contrail at the bottom is closest to the camera. You can also see the missile moving at a speed that you would never see from a large aircraft like a passenger plane.
NORAD definitely knows if it was a launch. They may not know “who” and are being told to keep quiet so as to avoid panic. When I was in Saudi Arabia right after the Gulf War, the base was alerted mistakenly. A SCUD was fired in Yemen as part of the civil war there and the satellite picked up the launch and it went right to the Command Post where someone mistakenly thought it was from Iraq. Our satellites pick up launches anywhere in the world.
I can see why the Navy would be concerned. I heard about the panic that would ensue when our P3’s would temporarily lose track of Soviet subs off of Alaska. Any foreign subs anywhere near our coasts should be tracked by P3s or SeaWolf attack subs. This could be China making a point. DefCon should’ve been raised if a foreign sub launched a missile off of our coast and Obama should’ve been ready to nuke someone. Scary thought. I’m sure he hates the nuclear football even more than Clinton did.
