(CBS) A mysterious missile launch off the southern California coast was caught by CBS affiliate KCBS's cameras Monday night, and officials are staying tight-lipped over the nature of the projectile.
CBS station KFMB put in calls to the Navy and Air Force Monday night about the striking launch off the coast of Los Angeles, which was easily visible from the coast, but the military has said nothing about the launch.
KFMB showed video of the apparent missile to former U.S. Ambassador to NATO Robert Ellsworth, who is also a former Deputy Secretary of Defense, to get his thoughts.
Scroll down for KFMB video showing the launch.

At 35 miles west northwest of LA that's in commercial airspace as well as maritime shipping lanes. The FAA should have a notice to airman posted and the restricted area closed. ( If there's a restricted area there).
A notice to Mariners should also be on fileIf nether, someone other than the US got a sub 35 miles off the west coast a fired a ICBM....not a good thing

Kinda weird to test an ICBM just North of Catalina, never heard of that before. Point Mugu Naval Air Weapons Station is near there, one of the navy's weapons testing grounds. There's a big annual military air show at Pt. Mugu.

Very odd. I’ve seen ICBMs launched from Vandeberg (from a distance) and it looks quite similar.

My Mom used to work at Point Mugu. I used to think Mr. Magoo was there too. I thought that was a little weird.
