Microsoft got Kinect technology since "Apple is a pain in the ass"
Techspot ^ | 6 November 2010 | Emil Protalinski

Back in June 2008, PrimeSense was looking to sell the technology that would eventually be engineered into what we now know as Xbox Kinect. The first company in Silicon Valley that PrimeSense CEO, Inon Beracha tried to demonstrate the sensor that powers Kinect to was none other than Apple.

The technology had been developed by engineers in the Israeli military.

When asked about why he thought of Apple first, Beracha told Cult of Mac that "It was the most natural place for the technology." The negotiations didn't go so well.

Beracha figured the technology was so good that he would be able to sell it to anyone. In the end, it came down to "Apple is a pain in the ass," Beracha reportedly said with a smile on his face.

We understand that Apple and Microsoft have two different business styles.

This is not meant as an anti-Apple nor anti-Microsoft thread and it should not devolve into either.

I am not a gamer and this question I am asking after reading the article is: What is Kinect technology?

Human interphase?

I am also not pro Apple or pro Microsoft. (I prefer Linux, but have used them all)

It uses an array of cameras to map movement so you can control a computer or play a video game without a controller.

It’s cool technology, but you look like a jumping idiot while you’re playing.

Kinect detects human motion and turns it into commands.

Kinect also uses voice command so it can simply change the channels on your TV (no remote) and record shows.

This is another technology in its infancy with lots of upside potential......as well as downside potential, like all technology.

“Real men use IBM.”

Ironically, IBM is no longer in the PC business.

Which type of IBM PowerPC (also ironically the same processor family that Apple formerly used) workstation running AIX Unix are you using?

Or are you referring to the IBM/Sony Cell processor in your Playstation 3...?

LOL

In fact, Mac hardware is nothing more than a slightly more advanced version of ‘normal’ PC hardware (EFI, Firewire 800 etc.). Macs have won awards several times as the best Windows machine in various categories. Mac Pros are actually less expensive than comparable Dell workstations for instance (Xeon, ECC memory etc).

Mac software (BSD Unix based MacOS X in particular) is where the Mac really shines. As a final irony it supports more open standards than oft-maligned Windows. OpenGL is one excellent example.

Apple computers have been growing marketshare much faster than the industry average over the last few years, and are scarcely limited to any particular “lifestyle”. Rush Limbaugh is one of the more famous Mac fans. ;-)

Kinect is like the WII controller, only bigger and bulkier. The controllers look like ice cream cones.

LOL! Yep. Bad news for Conservatives, though...

http://www.cultofmac.com/iphone-users-for-sarah-palin/62466

"iPhone users are twice as likely to be influenced by the Tea Party than voters who carry an Android or Blackberry phone, according to a new online poll by Zogby/463. In addition, iPhone users are twice as likely to believe that Sarah Palin “speaks for them,” and 60 percent predict a Republican takeover of Congress this year."

What are you talking about? You do not need a controller with Kinect.

Exactly!!! The Israelis aren't stupid, they can see the BS that is Apple. The sad thing is the Apple devotees can't see the obvious. The idea there is a magazine, website or organization that is called "Cult of Mac" reveals the cultlike nature of Apple. I know Swordmaker will paint the broad FUD label on me as usual for just reaffirming what Israelis also said (I'm betting he would accuse the Israeli that said this as being afflicted with FUD) which is predictable Swordmaker style. One wonders if you receive your free "Steve Jobs Edition" black turtleneck by ordering a 2 year subscription of Mac Cult magazine? Hmmm... Now there's an idea that could actually make Apple some cash but would make the Apple Cult look like idiots in the process.

You’re thinking of Move for the PS3.

The kinect is a camera above or below the tv that tracks yours body. No controller involved.

Since my old Xbox didn’t have HDMI for the new flatscreen, I bought a new Xbox with Kinect. Its actually a lot of fun and quite the workout. My 3yr old loves it.

Amen, Brudder!

Thanks for the support and input.

My view of Swordmaker is a 35ish man-boy who lives with Mumsie - and she buys him the Kleenex tissues he most definitely needs...

There is no reasoning whatsoever with that dude.

It appears that you’re trying to imply that OpenGL is not supported on Windows. I’m not even sure how to answer such ridiculousness.

Also pretty funny:

The funniest part is the "Linux guy" actually thought that outfit was cool... LOL

He wore it to some Linux convention IIRC.

(I like Linux, but this is classic.)
