... and another “last,” coincidentally. Zevon died after performing that song on David Letterman.

I always loved “Hit Somebody,” “Leave My Monkey Alone” and “Lawyers Guns And Money.”

This is why I like Engelbert

Lesbian Seagull

How he could sing this with a straight face is beyond me.

People quote Lawyers, Guns and Money who don’t even know who Warren Zevon is, it slipped into popular vernacular.

There was an edge underneath the wackiness of that one. I got the impression he knew that “excitable boy.”

Me, too. “If You Know What I Mean” and “September Morn” got me...well...into teenhood.

I first heard Tony singing "Rags to Riches" getting airplay in, IIRC, 1954. I guess he left an impression. Years later he came up with his signature tune about SanFran.

But I think my all-time favorite is this guy (<--youtube link), especially when he met up in the final decade of his career with George Shearing. If you decide to click on it, be sure to listen to both songs in the clip.

And if you can find them together somewhere on the web doing "A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square," go for it!

I know. Kind of sad. But, if it’s any consolation, people quote Beatles song every day as well.

You could be the ugliest, dorkiest guy on earth. You put Barry on, and woman will be tearing off there clothes and jumping on you.

I was just musing on that very point. I think his voice had a characterstic that resonated with, umm, certain parts of distaff anatomy.

Saw him on tv a couple of years ago. Voice is a little shaky, but still deep and rich.

Not from 2 years ago, but thought you might like

I can handle his version of Holly Holy but that's about it. I prefer the energy Neil Dimond projects to Engelbert's style but that's just me.

You can compare both version yourself:

Engelbert Humperdinck - Holly Holy

Neil Diamond - Holly Holy live 1971

Neil Schon was like 15 or 16 when he was with Santana. SERIOUSLY.
