Yeah, but they will eat small animals. I know they will eat baby birds out of nest boxes.

...raccoons and other wildlife are common -- but usually don't attack.

That's not what I learned from CSI last night...

We had one come in the house a couple of weeks ago, our little doggie jumped out of our bed and was hell bent on the attack. The raccoon was twice the size but skedaddled pretty quick. The kids and whole family was wide awake at 3am. The puppy had blood on his mouth, we cleaned it up, it was the racoon's not his. My little girl thinks he is a real hero. I lock the back door now.

They will get into your attic very commonly, I would not be surprised if they would not get into the house if they found a way in. They are very dexterous. I’m not saying one way or another, just that nothing they can do would surprise me. We live in an urban area and I see them ALL THE TIME.

I think they are like little bears. People think they are really cute (and they are) but after I found out they got into my bird boxes and ate the baby birds, I didn’t find them nearly so cute.

Good for your dog. Mine have never tackled a raccoon, altho they have tried to get possums and armadillos.

I had no idea they were so aggresive! I’m glad your little dog was so alert and ready!

“Oliver says authorities are looking into whether the family was keeping the raccoons in the home as pets”

I’m wondering that, too. It would be one possible explanation for the raccoon’s not being afraid of human beings (though not the only one, of course).

Whatever the reason, the poor kid! Prayers for a full recovery.

Is your dog up-to-date on his rabies vaccine?

Is the dog's rabies up to date???

I once rented a house with a couple of other guys. A raccoon ate through the asphalt shingled roof and lived in the attic. It took a while but the landlord finally put a new roof on.

However, during the hot Summer months, I could hear the raccoon scamper across the attic floor.

It was a walk-up attic, and [fear of] the raccoon prevented me from opening the door so as to help vent the heat at night.

they will also eat chickens when they are roosting and baby turkeys that are with their mothers. also had them decapitate a rabbit. I hate coons....one killed 1/2 of my chicken coop one night just for the pleasure of killing them, only ate one....they are smart enough to go through a doggie dog if you have one...also ate through the roof of one of our small buildings that I had a mother turkey with babys in it with a closed door..just like the chicken coop, the doors were all closed in the evening after they went in to rooste....chewed up a guinea's leg, but I was able to save the leg...had to kill several chewed up but alive chickens....hateful predators and quite efficient...

A raccoon attacked my father’s cat several years ago and did a huge amount of damage to its throat. Vet stitched it up and Daddy had to doctor the cat for a while; but the cat died from the encounter anyway. In retrospect, it would have been kinder not to go to the extreme measures we did and just had the cat put down. - My cat now would slash the raccoon; she’s sort of mean. Only reason she’s survived for 12 yrs. out here in the country.
