US Republican Boehner says spending cuts No. 1

WASHINGTON, Nov 3 (Reuters) - U.S. House of Representatives Republican leader John Boehner put lower government spending at the top of Congress' agenda next year, a day after his party took control of the House.

"It's pretty clear the American people want us to do something about cutting spending here in Washington and helping to create an environment where we'll get jobs back," Boehner told reporters on Wednesday.

Republicans picked up at least 60 seats in Tuesday's elections to hold a solid majority in next year's House. Boehner is expected to get the top job of House speaker, supplanting Democrat Nancy Pelosi.

With last year's U.S. budget deficit at a whopping $1.29 trillion, equal to 8.9 percent of gross domestic product, voters have been clamoring for smaller, less expensive government.

Some economists fear that politicians could pare spending too much and wind up stifling economic growth, while others have called for more stimulus spending to boost tepid economic growth that has failed to significantly reduce an unemployment rate stuck near 10 percent.

Embracing the small government theme, House Republicans have promised to rein in government. In September, they said their first step would be to cut Washington's spending back to 2008 levels, achieving $100 billion in savings immediately -- a move that would do little to sop up the red ink on the ledger.

I would say the first thing is to announce that the stimulus is over and the balance that hasn’t been spent is going to pay down debt.

Second is Bush tax cuts are made permanent.

Third is the removal of any tax on business that was implemented over the last 4 years.

Go from there.

Anything other then the DOD, Medicare, Medicaid or SSI budget is simply pissing into the wind.

Cutting EPA? Great, you have cut 1 percent of the budget.

You go after the meat. 60+ percent of our budget is in the 4 I have listed above.

Lets see if our newly elected Republican House has the balls to make cuts in those 4 areas

All government agencies and departments are rife with fraud and waste.

The purported reason for an agency existing is always secondary to it’s desire for preservation and expansion. Maybe it doesn’t start that way, but that’s the way it always ends up. For example, Homeland Security...a massive and wasteful bureaucratic mess.

It’s going to take big unflinching balls to make the cuts that need to be made. I hope we have sent people to D.C. who are up to the task.

I'd prefer that all study grants and research grants be de-funded entirely.

Too many lead to crap like this:

Feds Spent $800,000 of Economic Stimulus on African Genital-Washing Program

Part of a UCLA study grant.

"The genitalia-washing program is part of a larger
$12-million UCLA study examining how to better
encourage Africans to undergo voluntary HIV testing and counseling..."

Also, National Endowment for anything should all go.

Ultimately the solution must more pink-slips than you can count.

Yes, spending cuts are #1; more important than tax cuts which just raise leading, which will destroy USA unless dramatically reduced, dare I say elminated. Borrowing to pay for everything is just a _bankers_game_!

We have to stop teaching to the lowest common denominator, it is destroying us as a country. (And our children need to be taught Latin IMO).

Cutting the EPA’s budget is about more than saving money. I agree with the medicare/medicaid/budget but we’ll run into some stiff opposition with that politically, stiff enough to possibly cost us the gains we just made. SSI needs to be taken out of the general fund IMO. Hard to believe that I’m agreeing with Gore but I liked the idea of his “lockbox” for SSI. As for medicaid/medicare, I think we should look at the various sanctuary cities and the states that support them (with our tax dollars). I think you can see where I’m going with this. I agree with the DOD budget being untouchable. Arms sales represent one of our biggest exports. we need to encourage that business to the extent possible. It also seems like the Russians are cutting into our business there. Considering that our military technology is born out of actual bloody warfare, this is surprising. We need to maintain the edge either way. fact is, increasing the budget for military R&D has worked well for the civillian economy in the past. look at GPS, the internet, and computers for example. With that in mind, we might even increase the military R&D budget. Time to look at the F22 again perhaps too although that will probably make F35 sales difficult, speaking of bloated over budget government programs.

I honestly don't think that there is any fat in the budget left to trim.

(Because there isn't any budget)

Job 1: Restore smoking regulations to Capitol as existed before pelousi.

Job 2: Consign Pelousi to the nether regions of the lowest circles of the bowels of the capitol complex.

I agree with this for the most part.

In regards to the relationship the DOD has with contractors, there is a lot of good (which you indicated in particular with R&D) and quite a bit of bad. In many cases, sadly the DOD has become a welfare program for fat cat Mercedes Benz driving executives in the Washington DC area.

When companies such as Northrup Grammun and LockHeed have overhead rates of over 100 percent, there is a problem

These economists represent a political party that got its collective arse kicked up between its shoulder blades by the American people on Tuesday night. Just pointing that out.

The rat party and the commies are trying to trot out the old “republicans won, now everything is THEIR fault” line, but I don’t think it plays. The power that we have in Washington now *IS* the Power To Say No. The House doesn’t have to obey any ofay orders from the dog in the hut to pass this by midnite or else, don’t have to pass bills to see what is in’em, etc. The exception is that they also don’t have to pass a budget with a bunch of crap in it. The rat party refused to pass a budget, why should we?

Can I add Dept of Education to that list?

Along with HUD, Dept. of Energy, Health & Human Services. Dump the UN.

No. Cutting EPA is about far more than the percentage of the budget. Cutting EPA cuts their ability to issue edicts and regulations that keep Amerikee tied down like Pauline to the railroad tracks.
