An 85-year-old woman is in a coma after being viciously mauled and nearly killed by her neighbors’ pit bull terriers, in her own yard, in Southern Russia.

Alarmed by her screams, another neighbor called the police. When the officers arrived, the two raging animals turned on them.

“One of the officers blew his whistle,” said Krasnodar police deputy press attaché Maria Pirogova. “The dog dropped the victim and attacked the policeman, badly injuring his arm. The officers had no other option, but to shoot both animals dead.”

By that time, the woman was unconscious. She was immediately taken to a nearby hospital.

“The patient was in shock upon arrival,” said a deputy chief doctor of Krasnodar city hospital. “We had to perform an operation immediately, amputating her arms.”

Police vs pittbull seems to be a traditional Russian issue.

Here is another video of police shooting and driving over a pittbull in Russia.

Due to a clothes style, police uniform and vehicles, environment it was certainly at least 10 years ago and not in Krasnodar.

Thank you for the update. If any information is available about the court case, I’d also appreciate that as well. (e.g. was someone found responsible?)

Asked my wife about it. She says that she doesn't remember much, but believes that the dog was destroyed. The dog's owner had to pay a fine - no jail time. She remembers that people were upset with the judge because they thought he was too lenient.

For some reason I never realized that Russia had the same issue we have and I really can’t imagine why! Well, Ok part of it was, the Russians I worked with often could not afford dogs and they had a slightly different view of dogs compared with Americans (Americans are said to worship dogs and cats).

But the US has a ‘police vs pit bull’ issue too. Here’s the stats for 2008 (works out to be about 1 pit bull shooting per day in the US) :

Seattle, Washington (June 3, 2009) — DogsBite.org, a national dog bite victims’ group dedicated to reducing serious dog attacks, releases its 2008 report on pit bulls shot for public safety reasons. The 20-page report documents 373 incidences in which U.S. law enforcement officers and citizens were forced to shoot a dangerous pit bull to prevent an attack or to stop an ongoing attack.

The report tracked 12 data aspects per incident. Of the 373 incidences, 626 bullets were fired and 319 pit bulls were killed. 148 people suffered bite injury in these incidences as well. In at least three instances, the bite injury resulted in amputation. In six instances, the bite injury resulted in death. The findings also show that firearm intervention might have prevented at least eight deaths by a pit bull mauling in this period.
