The Norwich boys whooped up on the VMI and Citadel boys pretty bad. Stonewall should have stayed there another semester and taught them a little better.

And the Spartans weren't exactly paragons of freedom either - go ask the Helots.
You are of course correct. The Spartans were fighting for their freedom and the freedom of Greece while at the same time being some of the most brutal masters of their own slaves in history.
The helots revolted several times and even came close to winning their own freedom which says a lot considering they were going up against the best warriors the world has ever known.
And as history has described - the citizen-forces that hold America together has many facets.
So what Gen. Jackson had to say at that time is just as applicable today as WE ALL face and implacable enemy and I repeat his sentiment and my comment;

I admire the stand of the 300 against overwhelming odds, but when you look closely at Spartan society, it was absolutely repellent.
Yes, they were taught to be brutal killers and murderers too. They also were taught to steal but not be caught.
They did have some good in them. After they defeated Athens in the Peloponesian war their allies the Thebans wanted to wipe Athens from the map. The Spartans remembered the Athenians serving with them against the Persians and refused to do so.
I have my suspicions that the Athenians would not have been so kind to the Spartans had they won.
